Switch to mechanical pencils. With mechanicals you only worry when they are empty.

    We're joking, but...

imagine a millennial trying to work a pencil sharpener let alone empty one. Like them trying to "dial" a phone.

In engineering, architectural drafting, we used the ITAN lead pointers to keep the tips sharp on our mechanical lead holders:

'Vintage Leadpointers, sharpeners. All 3 of these are hand held models, in good working condition and use sharpened metal bars to sharpen turned leads in the mechanical pencil or leadholder. One is an extremely hard to find Fugle Patent #2557646, one is a beautiful copper bullet shaped Alvin 5555 made in West Germany, and the last is a black plastic Itan leadpointer."

Final drawings were done with either Swiss inking pens or the modern Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens:

Then everyone graduated to the computer drafting programs and all of these toys were put away.

    Best.

I think you need to apply for a government grant to pay for a committee to discuss the ramifications of this. How much pollution will be generated if the sharpener is emptied? Will the contents be incinerated? If so you may have to purchase carbon offsets from Mr. Gore. Do the contents cause cancer in the state of California? If so so may have to get a hazardous waste permit. The permits probably don't cost more than a few thousand dollars but I know you want to do the right thing.

Or you could just pitch it in the trash and get a brand spanking new one At WalMart or on Amazon and help keep the Chinese employed. Let your conscience be your guide. Bob
