When does Haz-Mat shipping apply?

No hazmat on ammunition but yes on primers. The range in shipping prices you see is the difference between those doing it correctly and the cowboy opportunists that bought some at their local store, came on here to triple their money and probably don't even know the laws regarding shipping hazardous materials around.

No exceptions, pack of 100 or pack of 10,000, all the same fee. You also need to be certified by UPS or Fedex to be able to do it.

It is against the rules to ship either ammo or primers via USPS. You may ship ammo via UPS or FedEx and their guidelines are on their websites. Primers may only be shipped by a certified hazardous material shipper. Are these items being shipped by people flaunting the rules? Without a doubt some are doing this but the risk of getting caught wouldn't be worth it to me. Bob

Primers, powder are hazmat.....loaded ammo is NOT. I have been told that brass with primers counts as ammunition, so it is not hazmat. So, as far as I know just the lose primers and lose powder are the hazmat. As said before, ammo has to go by private shipping company like UPS, Fed Ex or such....you cannot ship it through USPS.

Fedex and UPS will only accept ammo at a hub location, not a franchised outlet, and must be properly labeled with a consumer commodity triangle. Not a big deal, unless a hub outlet is a ways from you.

Uninstalled primers CAN mass detonate. Once loaded into a cartridge case, the mass of the brass prevent sympathetic detonation- one primer going BANG does not make ALL the primers go bang.

We used to use 2 different versions of the same blasting cap- that had 2 different shipping classes. One had 25 ft leg wires, the other 150 ft leg wires, but were otherwise identical. The additional mass of the longer leg wires changed the shipping class. It can be a strange field.
