Deer
I have never seen so many deer around my place in the last 10 years. There are deer everywhere. I have between 7-12 in my yard every day. Most are doe's with fawns but there are a few small bucks mixed in.
It is like a deer explosion. There are dead deer along the road all over. I used to feed them but not anymore. My wife puts old bread out and chips maybe once a week and it is eaten right away.
They need to be thinned out but I don't think enough are getting run over, I might need to get a permit and shoot a few.

Why would you feed dead deer? DonĀ

There's an ammo shortage and they're taking advantage of it.

We have a real shortage here in the NC mountains. I usually see a couple of mommies with fawns per day at this time of year.
This year, I have seen two does in the past 4 months, no bucks and no fawns. Makes me wonder if some disease has wiped out the whitetail population.

Judy and I had to stop in our driveway coming home from the high school skeet team banquet a couple of hours ago to watch momma and her fawn ambling around the yard. Now there is a doe vacuuming up the walnut leaves knocked down by last nights winds. I never knew that they were that fond of walnut leaves but she is doing a pretty thorough job. We haven't seen the turkeys and their chicks in a couple of days - I hope the yotes didn't get them. As I type this the Orioles are squabbling over the jelly in the window feeder. They are taking beaks full with them to feed their chicks. I hope I can find a Welches jelly sale because it looks like it might be a record year for Oriole feeding. Did I ever mention how much I like living in a rural area? Bob

allen, when I was a kid growing up in the area where you live, there were no deer. Our hillbilly ancestors killed them for survival food. There were a few deer around Biltmore when it was a dairy but deer were very scarce in the mountains.I would have thought they would have made a come back around Asheville being the new weirdo residents would never shoot an animal.

As I was driving the back road this afternoon to sit my grandsons, I came upon a newborn, still partially wet fawn in the road. It was very wobbly and disoriented - mom nowhere in sight. I was able to help it off the road and into the woods - didn't see a smashed body when I returned home, so I guess there's a good chance it made it. Karma says I'll probably meet it with the front end of my GMC after it's grown up big. No pictures - traffic was backed up with rubberneckers, as it was.

No shortage in the MidWest. I counted 68 on our north farm while checking fences and water tanks in February. Most any trip beyond the yard includes a deer sighting.

You are right, buddy. The new arrivals in the Asheville area won't shoot a deer. And they have made a big comeback. A year ago I was seeing a dozen deer a day, at this time of year I saw lots of fawns. Something is wrong this year.
Down in the Biltmore Forest neighborhood where the rich folks live, s. side of Asheville, they were having lots of deer/car wrecks. About 15 years ago they hired an outfit out of New Hampshire named White Buffalo to cull the herd. They couldn't find a local hillbilly to shoot some does and fawns?
At any rate they paid a lot of money for White Buffalo, and the day before the hunt was to begin, one of the residents got her husband to file a lawsuit. Her husband, a lawyer, she got her legal help for free. He got an injunction and put the hunt off for a year. So they had even more deer killed by cars that year.
The next year, she got another injunction and halted the cull for a second year, and I don't know what has happened since then.

Obviously the wrong people/person are/is hitting the deer.
