Propane torch literally on fire!
A friend and I were out repairing a broken copper water line at the gun club. I was soldering a fitting on a pipe and pushed the button, lit the torch using a brand new disposable tank of gas. Put the flame on the pipe and there was a big orange ball of flame.
Took me a second to get it through my head that it wasn’t grease or some thing I had ignited on the pipe but that the torch was on fire.
Got up and out from the utility room and was able to hold it long enough to throw it out the back door. Luckily only cooked the hair off my hand.
Here is what was left when it burned itself out.
Needless to say, that was a first for me and nearly a last for one of the buildings!

Faulty connection at the hookup or a blown seal in the torch head ?

that looks like a 'coleman' camping fuel propane canister, not MAPP gas. The torches for the two gases are not interchangeable.

As has been said, that could have been a lot worse BikerBob. Perhaps this isn't the best place to discuss the hair on your hand.

I beg to differ.......look up the Benzomatic TS4000T........a very common one available at all home improvement stores......compatible with MAP gas and propane. I use one for HVAC work.
Filter the search for fuel type and there are several compatible with the two gasses.
I would say it was a fault with the torch itself and not a fuel incompatibilty issue.

Yes, i was a bit slow to finish the fix!
I’ve used that torch head many times before on those small propane tanks with no excitement. It had been 2-3 years since I had used that torch head as I keep one in a plumbing tool box, with solder, flux, Teflon tape and a few fittings and valves etc.
I wonder if it sat too long and a seal had dried out? Finished with another one that I use to light the fireplace and grill so that one is in pretty regular service.
