When we were on the Fire Dept., my wife drove the water tender. It had a 5 speed trans with a four speed rear splitter. She would drive it with out using the clutch, and could get all 20 gears (usually didn't need to of course,but could). Held 2500 gallons and no baffles in the tank. It was a slosher out the back overflow, but she never had a tailgater. We were all dressed up fancy at a fellow firemans wedding, when yep, the pager goes off. My wife jumped in her tender in heels and a dress and away she drove. Those were good times, serving on the dept.

When i joined the fire dept in 1983 our tanker was a 1967 ford 600. It had a 4 speed with a 2 speed rear axle .Only a few of us old farm boys knew how to drive it ,
Some of the city slickers never did master it

My three daughters all drive stick.

Started driving in 1974....first car was a Mustang II (what a turd) with 4 banger/4 speed....Never owned a car with an automatic transmission until 2003. Taught my wife and both sons to drive manual transmission cars as the choice was that or stay home......

All our family drive stick. Yesterday, my 19 YO granddaughter went to the tire shop to get tires rotated. A guy came out to drive her car into the shop and he couldn't do it.

doubt very much any on here have to, but in an emergency I would bet most could get it moving towards safety.......

Our back-up wheat truck (late 1970s) was a late 40s Ford with a four speed and two speed rear axle.
Pre-dated sychro-mesh gears and was a real beast when downshifting.

I bought a 1947 International K-5 when I was fourteen. It had a four speed with a two speed axle. It was fully synchronized and easy to shift. I worked construction and they had an old Chevy gas tractor with a four speed and a brownie. I drove some early 50s Ford winch trucks and like other folks on this thread have stated Ford trucks weren't synchronized and were miserable beasts. The first time I got in one they told me to just get close to the correct gear and mash it in. I told them I knew how to double clutch so no problem. I got every gear the first time I took off and never got them again, miserable machines. Just get it close and mash it in!

I learned to drive a 75 chevy pickup with a three on the tree at age 10, too many tractors and grain trucks to remember after that.

Learned on a 48 GMC 3/4T and a 48 Willys pickup. GMC had starter pedal on floor and had to pull the trigger up to get reverse; and the jeep NEVER had brakes. 12 years old hauling 200 bu. wheat on a 47' Binder, an " I don't know age Diamond Reo", and the "new" truck - a 50' ford. All 4 speeds. No 2 speed.

Spent the night with #3 after first leg of return from Florida. Took her lifted Jeep out for a spin. Its a 5 speed. Weather was perfect for a drive. Asked how driving lessons for son-in-law were going. She said he is doing better but it's been awhile so she needs to get him back at it. đ

Church had a Scout Bus lovingly maintained by an old sergeant. He drove it from KY up to near the Canadian border one summer for a troop adventure.
I drove it to a camporee one weekend and he saw me running down the road -- next day he saw me and asked what gear I was in and I told him "Fifth".
He about fell over -- he didn't know it was a five speed so he made that trip at under 55 mph.
Asked me how I knew it was a 5-speed and I shrugged and said with reverse where it was it meant 5th was there. ;)

OOPs, I inadvertantly offended a millennial couple. âšī¸ A neighbor asked if I would loan them my trailer to move some furniture. OK, you'll need a 2" ball. Uhh, my pickup has a square hole thingy in the back. Oh, I'll use my mom's pickup, it has the thing with 3 balls on it. That's ok, I'll bring the trailer to you & help you move.....They never said thank you afterwards & now avoid any direct contact. So, I did a good deed & now they won't talk to my wife & me. Sounds like a win win situation.đ

My (blonde) niece came to live with us for a summer when she graduated high school and needed transportation so she borrowed my brother's plow truck, 1/2 ton Chevy.
It was all going well and one day a month later we were chatting and I asked her "how's the truck working out?" She said "oh fine, but it gets really bad mileage and it's not very fast". I thought "good, all we need is a blonde tearing around in a plow truck" and I let it go.
A couple weeks later she mentioned it again, about the bad mileage and "it's not very fast". I thought "huh, why would she mention that again?" So I asked her "what do you mean exactly?"
She said "oh it drives fine and has lots of power but I can NOT get it over 55mph on the highway." So we went out to look at it. Sure 'nuff.............. low range.
She had that poor Chevy up to 55mph on the highway. IN LOW RANGE. My God, how many RPMs is that!!!!

This is not about a millennial, his is 70+ years old and worked for me over 30 years.
In his younger days he was working on a farm doing something and was about 10 miles from home.
Some reason he had no way home except a tractor, he could not drive a stick shift and today he can't either.
Hopped on the tractor and away he drove, 1st gear all the way, he did not know how to change gears. I asked him whatif he had gotten into reverse? " I would have backed all the way home" was his reply.
