I have used the tree branch and the metal rods . Either one works well for me

Me too, but without the fancy bushings. I can find water lines, sewer lines, and electrical lines. I've never tried it for diggin' a well, though.

with the rain we've had this year it's harder to not find water.

I know what it is but I've never tried using any sort of divining rod to find water or anything else

Divining rods worked "well" for me, it was amazing the first time I tried it.

My dad was a results-oriented guy.
When well driller didn't hit water when drilling an 8", 400 ft deep irrigation well dad called in the "water witch" who drove a stake about 50 feet from the dry well.
Driller was hesitant but dad agreed to pay for the second hole if it was dry.
Driller became a believer when he hit water!

It works. During wet periods tree roots will be so loaded with water you will pick them up. As for deep well drilling I've never tried but I have located water lines and shallow springs.

My Dad was very successful water witching with a fruit tree forked branch. Everyone says it doesn't work but I have seen my Dad be successful about 80% of the time.
