Hypothetical follow up question
What happens if? My grandfather passes away and in his stash of guns is an original Thompson 1930s model tommy gun. No paperwork to be found just an old relic thats been in a closet for 70 years.

No. Once a machine gun, always a machine gun. Even if it were legal to do as you ask, the barrel is too short, so it would be an unregistered short barreled rifle.

While there are a couple of nice private military museums in the US, I believe that unregistered NFA items can only be registered to the DOD Military Museum system. And, that system already has as many USGI Thompsons, some new in the crate, as they could ever need.

While a curator for the New York State Military Museum, I was sent on a detail to turn in surplus N.Y National Guard firearms to the U.S. Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama. I turned in app. four hundred Reising Submachine guns, a couple of hundred Thompson, and various other guns. We were then allowed to draw out various weapons for our museum exhibits.
They were nonplussed about the Thompsons and Reisings, they have beaucoup amounts. At the time, I was told they had more then fifty thousand B.A.Rs in crates.
They were interested in the couple of hundred 03's an 03A3's we had...
