Tampons in your trauma kit?

Are you one of those folks who keeps tampons in their trauma kit, hoping it will be useful to stop bleeding? This vid... though it has a bunch of needless discussion... proves how useless that is.

    Out of high school a neighbor stops at the house and tells me a car he bought was leaking oil. I crawl under it and see a slight puddle of oil coming from the rear of the engine. Taking off the inspection cover I discover the people he had bought the car from had crammed tampons in the housing to keep the rear main seal from leaking on the ground temporarily. I laughed so hard I could barely tell him what had happened.

    Absorbing blood is not the same as pressure treating a wound to keep the blood from coming out. Duct tape over gauze would work much better.

    I wrestled in High School. Our trainer kept them in the trainer kit. I watched several of my teammates with one stuck up their noise when they had a bad bleed....

    Most things have their place where they work well and places where they don't. Tampons may not work well plugging holes in arteries but the demonstration it's useless in demonstrating it. Blood has clotting factors, the fluid they are using doesn't. Also anybody with basic knowledge knows you aren't going to stop an arterial bleed by plugging the whole in the surrounding tissue. However plugging the hole will help slow tissue bleeding and can be used in addition to putting direct pressure on the arterial bleed or/and putting pressure on the artery above the wound.

    Tampons certainly have a place in a field pack. There is a lot of material in a compressed package.

    I like to think I saved my dog by using a tampon and some duct tape to hold it all together until we got to the vet. Vet had a good laugh.

    The "stoppers" don't seem to have much use but the "pads" are great for severe wound dressing. Highly absorbent and sterile to boot.
