Definitely Walter Brennan. Grandparents of long ago were involved in WWI veterans groups and Brennan's pictures were posted in lodges.

I did some work for some folks once that had his picture up on the wall. I mentioned that they must be big Walter Brennan fans and the lady answered "Of course we are! He's my grandpa!" Could'a knocked me over with a feather.

I still have my guns of will Sonnet lunch box from 7th grade . I wanted it not so much for the actors it was a good show at least i though so as a kid , but because it was a gun based lunch box ( now would get you expelled and the feds called and child services i would bet )
I don't think it was on more than a season or two ?
I did not know about his military history and his voice that's interesting and makes me like him that much more .
I thought he was a great supporting actor as they were called back when they made a living and not a huge fortune for every show like today

He did a fine job as the preacher in the movie "Sgt. York" teaching Gary Cooper the error of his ways. I enjoyed seeing him in all of his movies!

Unlike the effeminate, liberal denizens of Hollywood today, when I was growing up there were celebrities we could respect. They actually had walked the walk. Audie Murphy comes to mind but my favorite was probably Jimmy Stewart. He stayed in the reserves for decades after his active service. Bob

My very first thought when I viewed that picture was it looked a bit like Harry Morgan from MASH & Dragnet fame. Looking closer and already learning the correct ID, I can see a young Walter Brenan.

Yep, the Indian lodge. Best tasting water of any hotel I have ever stayed in, straight out of lake Wallowa.
As you likely know, Name don't seem to bother the multiple tribes attending Chief Joseph Days, but you are right, some non tribal member will probably raise a stink sometime in the future .
