ruger automatic 22 pistol serial number
Howdy , i have had a number of the ruger mark pistols , but i recently acquired a Ruger Automatic looks like the mark 1 but does not have a serial number ! is this common to not have a number assigned ? thank you

EVERY Ruger Mark I has a serial number as does all Ruger's.

thank you i thought so also !, this is not marked as a mark 1 it has no model on it . It is only stamped on ( Left) RUGER 22 cal Long Rifle ,Automatic Pistol
The other side (right) is marked as follows : Sturm , Ruger & Co.INC Southport,Conn. U.S.A.
No other marks on pistol , I removed the grips and no marks or numbers on frame or barrel !

As far as I know all mk 1s should have the serial # on the right side in front of the ejection port. I find it hard to believe it could have legally left the factory without a #. If it was an employee lunchbox (stolen) gun then this could explain the lack of a number. Has the gun been refinished and the number removed? Regardless it is an illegal gun and I certainly would not own it or have it in my possession. Bob

If you post a high resolution close up of the markings on the right side of your gun, we may be able to tell you if the finish is original or polished & re-blued.
If original finish, you can send it to ATF & they will give you documentation that it is a factory error, & you can either keep it or sell it. (It would bring a good price, as such an error is unlikely.)
If refinished, then Bob's response would apply, & you won't get the gun back from ATF.

I will post some pics there is no signs of any refinish , of any kind or shaving , sanding or reblueing .
Were all of the luger style marked with a model number such as Mark 1 2 3 etc...?

My guess is that Ruger did not send out handguns without serial numbers even in 1949. A call to Ruger customer service will tell you for sure.

Ruger Standard and Mark I Serial Number History
The above chart shows the approximate first serial number shipped for the indicated year. This number should be used as a point of reference only. It is not necessarily the very first serial number shipped, but it can be used to determine the approximate year your Ruger firearm was shipped.I believe that based on this chart all mk 1 Rugers were serial numbered. There appears in your pictures a discolored line ahead of the ejection port where the serial number should be. Draw your own conclusions but be careful what you do with this handgun. Bob

You might pull the gun apart and see if there is anything inside on the frame or bolt.

The gun has been completely stripped no marks or numbers of any kind !
I will contact Ruger when they open back up for business on Monday! They have been closed the week for the holiday !

It's for sure a Mark I. Very strange and it of course is not refinished.

I believe the first guns starting in 1949 were just known as Standard Models" and the "MARK 1" was the target model. Anyway I feel sure it should have a serial number.

Yes, not a Mark, but for some reason I call them that. Standard it is and it SUPPOSED to have a serial.

That's true but Ruger serialized all of their pistols. Other companies like Colt and Winchester did the same even though they weren't required by law to do so.
