How far out of your way would you go for $35
A guy won an auction weeks ago. It was for a bunch of random stuff, just a box of gun related goodies. The guy questioned the $35 shipping on the box. I told him we put an average cost on all of our boxes instead of going back and forth figuring up shipping on items. He wasn't happy, but understood. He asked if he could pick it up...which is fine with us. He is moving from California to Tennessee and actually drove here to pick that box up. It was after 9pm when he arrived. He's in a huge box truck too.....so it had to cost him $100 in gas to make this detour.

It’s all about the motivation. We used to drive clear to Soldotna for ice cream cones, that’s 100 miles each way. Reasons?
1) “I’ve got to get out of this town!”
2) great scenery
3) good ice cream

maybe just a side trip for the family ? just a little longer drive and scenery maybe thought just a little out of the way and more country to see I can not imagine any one no matter how tight would make a drive that far for 35.00 has to be another reason ( I would like to think )
I have had a couple people stop by to pick up items that lived with in 10 miles or so , once a fellow called ask how far I was from him ( we live in the same state ) . I looked on a map and said I had no problem but I did explain 10.00 to ship ( or close ) he would have in a couple days and flip side trying to set up a time to meet and driving 65 + miles one way maybe a bit more . I just did not see any positive out come for the event , he thought it over and agreed 10.00 was a better deal over all .

Around here Joe Biden's gas is $3.50 or more, so $35 is a mere 10 gallons. Anything more than a 250 mile round trip (in my car) would eat that all up. That's how I'd figure it.
Of course, there's also the wasted day making such a drive. If it meant giving up a tee time or a fishing trip, to hell with it.

He's sleeping in the box truck, so I cannot imagine this trip is a lot of fun. I am taking Larry with me on the Virginia trip, so we are leaving a bit early so we can make some stops along the way up.

I simply won't bid on an item if I think the shipping is out of line for what I think is reasonable and I'm not going to waste my time & money to pick it up.

By the time I had the conversation with you about shipping costs, that would have exhausted $35 worth of effort.
that is to say, not much. Shipping is a tax that comes as a result online shopping.
In economics, there is a very real term called “opportunity cost”.

I do sometimes travel a bit to pick up a non expensive item, just for the road trip.
My dad would drive 60 miles round trip to fill up on gasoline, Toyota pick up, to save 10 cents on a gallon.
But then he was retired and liked to hit Long John Silvers and Tractor supply.

My dogs have me trained to take them for daily car rides! Each day, every day! They don't care where we are going, just make sure the air conditioner is running and the back windows are rolled halfway down. 😁
This thread also gives me flashbacks to an old Camel cigarette commercial. "I'd walk a mile for a Camel" 🙂
