It's extremely rare to see a VW with a radiator in the front. We all know that they were in the back. 😎

I had a showroom '65 Beetle for years. Discovered there were at least seven ways to have sex in one - and that you could maneuver a boxed riding mower into and back out of the back seat of one. It could really handle snowy roads, but was a genuine bastard in crosswinds with its oversteer issue. Also that they became ovens in Laredo, Texas, which is where and why I sold it.

they were a love or hate it car the people I knew that had them loved them ( even a few of the fellows stationed in Germany liked they were easy to work on and parts every where cheap on gas and cheap to buy )
as for me they have kind of grew on me the old bug style but never wanted one , I would take a old Mannix or similar dune buggy though 😁

My first car was a Fiat 600 like this one back in the ‘60’s:
It actually had an inline 4 cylinder engine that was water cooled. Radiator and engine in the rear.

I think it was 12 bolts and the body comes off. Bolt the steering wheel shaft together, 3 wires, and you have a crazy dune "type" buggy. Covered a lot of dirt hills with that thing.

One thing about those Bugs, their suspension could handle anything. We had a HUGE dip in the road where I was growing up, even we teenagers would slow down to 10mph going through it, or you'd bottom your front suspension and bash the front bumper into the asphalt. I was riding with my brother once in a Bug and we came roaring up to that dip, I screamed like a little girl expecting to smash my face against the dash or worse, and it just...............went through it. No fuss, nothing bad. Jaw dropping amazing.

I loved my Bug!! Cheap to buy, cheap to drive, cheap parts, so easy to repair you could do it yourself. What's not to like??
Rocky Raab, you are either very creative or you had a far more flexible girl friend than I had because I only came up with two or three ways to have sex in a Bug!! 😁

Walked in to local Trak Auto. Youngster at counter asked what I needed- told him radiator cap for a 64 VW Beetle. He starts typing on computer- Manager looks at me, swats the kid on the head.

I had the 1971 VW van. Same engine as the Beetle but a lot more wind resistance, and a lot more cargo capacity. Which meant, the engine was going to blow. The engine in this vehicle blew two times. I must be an auto masochist because I just love these cars.

When I was in high school and working part-time at a m/c shop, the owner of the shop had a friend who had a Beetle with a Chev. 327 Small Block in it.
We could hear him coming down the street long before he even pulled into the parking lot.
a old class mate and some what friend loved VW's had one in high school all decked out bright orange big tires well the 70's style looks . I had not seen him in 30 + years then bumped into him at a local burger place that let the car guys have Friday nights as a cruse in he still loved VW's he has one with a small block chevy . told me the try five chevys ( 55 56 57 ) frame was a direct fit with a few changes to mount the bugs body on but wheel base and easy to do said in high school he wanted one but lacked the $$ also said there is many of them around converted over

I got so good and familia with the engine I could swap engines in less than 30 minutes and have it running by myself, wouldn't even think about trying it now 😀....Edit:.... forgot to say it was on dunebuggies.

Our gold dredge used a VW engine to run the pump, it had the Stinger exhaust pointing up in the air. One night we forgot to put the bucket over it, and it rained all night. Next morning it wouldn't turn over, a cylinder had filled up with rain.
So we pulled the plugs and rather than losing them over the side into the river we poked them into the spark plug leads and left them dangling. Hit the start button, it turned over and shot all the water and gas out the open spark plug holes, and the dangling plugs ignited it.
We had a monstrous fire in about 2 seconds, managed to shut off the gas line and then started throwing buckets of water on it, which just sluiced the burning gas over the side into the river. Now the river is on fire.
Man it's a good thing the EPA wasn't around for that fiasco. The only thing that saved us from burning down the countryside was the fact it had rained all night and the gas was consumed quickly.

First car was a bug. Loved that thing…easy to work on, great in the snow, slow enough to keep me from killing myself. Froze my tail off the first couple years until an old-timer taught me to adjust the heat chambers on the engine…warm and (like Rocky) a sex mobile ever after.

Years ago my hunting partner of 55 years and his wife and my wife on NYS Thruway. Looked in my rear view mirror and all I could see was smoke from his VW Beetle. Walked about 100' and there sat NYSP in crossover. Asked him where closest exit was. He said "about 150 yards but if you tow that VW with your truck I will give you both a ticket. When you get thru toll gate I don't care what you do." Cost my friend $75 to go 150 yards. I towed the VW from New Paltz to Newburgh with a large rope. What a wild ride that was.
My dear friend Gerhard Schiller passed away in February and is buried with his wife Ursula in the Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY. He was a Berlin trained Master Toolmaker and worked at IBM in R&D. Those were the good days.-------------------------------------Ray

my first job was at a grocery store . at the time the assistant manager ( I would guess he was 19 maybe 20 ) had duct tape on his shoes nice fellow and had a old VW it had a huge piece of sheet metal over where the cloth top was at one time one of the brothers had hammered down and riveted in place, the old bug was beat all to heck and looked it was a war survivor and I seen better looking in the junk yards LOL he had four brothers and the VW was passed down the line starting with the dad Fred was the youngest and of course had three brothers and his dad all taking there turn as the owner passing items down the line to him If there had been another brother I fear the VW would not have made it
but it still did what it was suppose to it was my 1st encounter with a VW . Fred said back then it was almost impossible to get it stuck and went thru snow when many others were left stuck I doubt if it was much of a chick magnet thought 😁
like many others over the years I worked with or met I often wonder what become of them over the years, I never really cared but now reflecting back on younger years ( I at least ) think of such things , I do know some of them have passed on
