Anyone else having an overabundance of hickory nuts this year?
We've lived here for over 20 years now, and I've never seen so many hickory nuts on the ground. They were bad enough in 2019 when my wife stepped on one and went through her surgeries and extended therapy and recovery. But this year there is at least 75% more than that year accumulating on the driveway.
I wound up putting a piece of rubber horse mat on the bottom of my back blade and dragging that behind my tractor to scrape the little buggers off the driveway.
My WAG is that we had plenty of rain this spring and early summer and that was enough to stimulate the nuts. Now we are in about the 4th week of no rain, and the nuts are falling like crazy now.

Not hickory, but my three walnut trees seem to be working overtime! It is a pain keeping them picked up and if I miss one the mower doesn't. The deflector on the deck keeps them pretty much at ground level but I can still get pretty good distance.😁 Bob

Yes theres a lot this year. They're just starting to come down now. We've been here 16 years and some years theres tons and other years like last year not so many. Some years its like walking on ball bearings.

most around here are almost empty if you open them, think they last 4-5 weeks of dry weather has withered up the meat inside.......... both hickory and walnuts

Both the Walnut and Hickory trees are loaded this year......we have had plenty of rain and until the last couple of weeks, decent weather....

Wish we had that problem none around us. As a kid ther were a few trees at a local park we would get a few and the walnuts but can not remember the last hickory nuts I have seen
But we do have a apple and a pear tree in the yard that are loaded down more than I can ever remember them having
Wife has plans for canning freezing and jelly
See how that goes

When I was a kid my parents had a source for them. Dad would crack them with a hammer and we'd have to pick the meat out. Also with the black walnuts, but they were a lot easier to work on.

I have no experience whatsoever with hickory nuts but whenever I hear them mentioned I can't quit thinking about Yule Gibbons!

Up here in the frozen wastelands of the North (MN) we have oaks - 7 big ones in my backyard. Bumper crop of acorns due to the extended hot spells last 2 months. They got through the drought better than the other trees due to deep roots & living on a lake. Gonna be a lot of raking when they stop falling.....
