Another memory from days long gone,,
In scouts we made a rope making machine and spun our own rope. We would then 'whip' the ends to prevent fraying/unraveling.
We could tie many many knots and do several different lashing techniques. We lashed together a tower in our school gym and raised it. What a proud moment, and had a ton of fun doing it. Just an old man stumbling down memory lane. Thanks.

I wanted to be in the scouts but mom and dad said no way it cost money something we have none of , I do miss I never got to join

We had a rope making machine in HS agriculture. That was about forty/fifty years ago. I still have one of the ropes and went to use it last year to know avail. Every time I put pressure on, it would break. Kind of sad to throw in the trash.
Also in scouts I learned some knotting techniques. I still can make a hangman's noose.

When I was the scoutmaster of our church's troop we cut a bunch of small willows to clear a lakeside and lashed together a tower in the bed of my pickup for the local parade. Yep, had a ball.
One of my scouts is now my dentist!

No boy scouts troops out in the country when i grew up . Had a couple of cousins who were scouts in another part of the state. We did have 4H clubs back then

I was in AWANA's...................we studied the bible and played kickball.

We made a Monkey bridge for a jam-o-ree when I was in the Boy Scouts. I still remember (and use) the knots I learned back then.

We were working a small country fair this last weekend and one of the farm tents was having kids braid and make their own rope.
Many kids stopped by our concession stand with braids of rope hanging over their shoulders. They did not have the finished ends you mentioned so that is a skill they will have to learn on their own.

During my decades as a Scoutmaster we tied every knot you've ever heard of, and then some, including the Double Overhand Snarl. I still like to question the boys when they're up for rank advancement... if you don't practice, you forget. "Tie me a Hackamore" and toss him 3 feet of paracord, then have him attach it to my water bottle.

Its not just navigation and knot tying, The entire tradition and culture around scouting has ruined by DEMOCRATs and their ideology.

One of my favorite memories from my days as scout was building a signal tower at one of the large district Jamborees.
It was just over 23 feet tall with a platform on the top. We lashed it all together with cross beams from top bottom to top....We won that competition.....
Fast forward 30 years later, both my sons were active in scouts.....they were not allowed to build a tower more than 6 feet high....

Hah, here in Alaska we lash together trebuchets to see how far we can chuck a punkin after Halloween!
