Fund Raiser Auction...WOW!
A friend's daughter has a particularly nasty form of cancer. Family decided to do a benefit event to raise money for medical and other expenses. It was held at the county fairgrounds, utilizing one big building for the silent auction, another for the meal, and the big cattle barn for the live auction and live music. I was amazed at the turnout. Hundreds of people, ready to spend money.
Various individuals and businesses donated things to sell at auction. I had an Anderson AM-15 Optic Ready Carbine, new in the box, and I donated it. I had about $450 in it, I think. Dawnie bought a "movie night" gift basket from a girl at our church, for $50, and donated that.
It started with a barbecue dinner at $20 a plate. Over 750 meal tickets were sold. Food was good too.
Then there was a silent auction that lasted a couple of hours. I bid on a few items, and was outbid. That's the way it usually works. My usual function at an auction is to make the other fella pay more for the item than he had intended to.
There were over 50 items in the live auction, mostly high dollar stuff. Guns, tools, coolers, good bourbon, all kinds of stuff.
We didn't stay until the end of the live auction. It was getting late, and old folks like us need our rest. I did stay and see how my AM-15 did though. It sold for $1,500!!! I was very pleased.
A little later, a Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle sold for $3,400!!!
Cornhole game boards sold for $1,100 a pair. A cheap Craftsman roto-tiller sold for $450. A television sold for $2,100.
And the "movie night" gift basket? With a half hour left, it was languishing with a $20 bid. So, I bid $50 on it, and figured I had won, but someone bid $55. I bid $60 and it seemed to stabilize at that price, with only a few minutes to go. At end of auction time, I went over to the silent auction building to claim my prize. A lady was walking off with it, having outbid me in the last few minutes. Good for her!

I just gave you a major thumbs up. Both for your generous donations and for posting this rather inspiring story. I get so tired of all the negative news we are bombarded with that stories of hope and generosity really help peel back the dark clouds over my soul. Judy and I have that charity shoot for cancer patients coming up in 4 weeks and this is my time to worry about donations and shooter participation. Seeing all the constant news about the callousness and selfishness in the country has made me wonder if we will have a successful shoot this year. Then I read your post and it makes me realize that there are a lot of good people out there but they get overshadowed by the selfish dick heads in our society. Perhaps I don't need to worry quite as much because the good folks will probably step up again this year. So thanks Mr. Nunn for putting my worries in perspective. Bob

There is still some GOOD people and I welcome those kind at my table anytime just like I commented on you nunn about 8-10 years ago, that you are one of those and it seems still in place.

Great cause and thanks for sharing.
I am donating my time and resources to an upcoming charity event in Naples Florida here in a few weeks. Its the first time since COVID I have really done anything charitable and Im excited to he a part of something that benefits others again.

This kind if thing still happens in some of our smaller rural fire districts and towns . Always gives me a warm feeling to help folks out .Random and not so random acts of kindness proves their is still good in the world

The local benefit auctions around here are great. Very very generous people. Always nice things donated for a good cause. If the farmers are behind the cause, then they will often get into a friendly bidding war with another farmer for something. Chemical companies, parts stores, gravel/dirt haulers, hair stylists, restaurants and so many other businesses donate a tremendous number of items ranging in value from minimal to large. Everything is well respected and appreciated. Homemade desserts by the older ladies always bring outrageous prices. Anywhere from $100 to $500 for a pie. Or $100-$300 for cookies and then a lot of the time, the high bidder has the person bringing it to them pass it around the crowd to be shared. Country folks are great to help their neighbors.
