CPAP Recall Puts Sleep Apnea Sufferers in a Scary Position

As many as 2 million people in the US use CPAP breathing machines made by Philips that have been recalled—and they're struggling to get the machines fixed or replaced.
The company recalled a number of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines as well as BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure) machines and ventilators; the FDA has the complete list here and Philips has it here.
Black debris from the polyester-based polyurethane sound abatement foam used in the machines can break down and get into the machines' air pathways, thus potentially being inhaled or swallowed by the user.
This can cause serious medical issues; the FDA has classified the recall as a Class I, the most serious class, which means continued use of the devices can lead to serious injuries or death.

Is this related to the ozone "cleaners" that are being advertised on TV?
I haven't paid any attention since I use a Resmed

I reckon iff'n ya can't sleep w/o life support, you're in big trouble sooner or later.

Been using a Resmed Airsense 10 for several years (on my 2nd one). Switched to a Phillips Dreamwear mask about three years ago. That made a BIG difference in my experience with BIPAP! I started getting better numbers immediately. If you are having trouble with your particular machine, try some different types/brands of masks, you may be surprised at the results.

Talked to My Sleep lab DOC the culprit is the ozone cleaning machines. Don't see ads for those any more on TV, and the Insurance company's are out in force on these.
As a precaution Phillip's is recalling their machines just in case ozone might have ever been used. I filled out the recall notice on the Phillip's website. Even tho my machine is near the end of it's life (5 years) it is still covered. But.... could take 3-6 months to replace with the back log.
Said, Stop Don't use. Ya Right.
Doc called in a prescription for a new machine,, just in case a Bi-Pap come up available. All machines are currently in short supply.
But insurance wants me to rent it for 6 months before that company will cover the cost of purchase. That will come back into my Insurance deductible again. What a crock.
