Those walk in tub ads are drawing me in like a moth to one of those bug zapper things
It keeps popping up here and there.....this ad with this lady stepping into a tub that has jets all over the place and a bench style seat in it. I picture this thing being pure joy to use. It must take 45 minutes to fill up....but if you plan on spending an hour in it I can't see why that would be a problem. Would it ever leak? Its got a swinging door that cannot be the most secure thing to have on a tub. I picture Larry leaving it dirty all of the time.
They don't put a price on the ad....which tells you what it must cost is insane.
I've wanted a tub with jets forever....but never took the time to look into it. This thing has me thinking HARD about checking into it. I just know the first call I make will open the doors to all kinds of nonsense.

Was just getting ready to have one installed at Moms house when she went in the nursing home. I am thinking it was around 7500 or so installed from Lowes. Now..make sure the water heater is large enough to fill that thing up. We have a large jet tub in the master bath and just when it is full... the hot water is out.

We have one of those tankless water heaters....it was the best thing we've ever done too, never out of hot water and the power bill went immediately down when it was installed. I just wish we had done it sooner. The kids ALWAYS managed to get their showers just before I did, so I went for many years taking these showers that started off warm and it was a crazed race to wash off before it turned freezing.

I take it, you have to sit in it as it fills up....and sit in it as it drains all the dirty soapy water. Then take a shower to rinse off.

One thing that I thought of, how do you wash your hair in that style of tub?

You'll freeze your tookus sitting there naked waiting for it to fill and then drain. And you can't get out of it at all unless it is drained. Or you're an acrobat.

At this time in my life I would consider a whirlpool style tub. Not a tub with a door that may end up leaking or that I have to sit in while it fills up and empties. If you don't need the door because of age or a handicap why add complications? Bob

My friend had one installed for his (live in) mother in law, he told me that it was north of 15 grand

Make sure you have good drainage where you install them. Like Jacuzzis, after a year they leak.

Besides the potential issues previously mentioned, I would be not only be concerned of door leaks but mold on the rubber seal. I've read some ugly stories about front loading clothes washers.

Never had a fancy smancy tub, but I've owned a front load washer for 20+ years.
Never heard of this mold in a front load washer.

I know very little except second hand info a co-worker / friend's uncle had one put in I think it was 12 or 13k I do not recall the exact number but it was not cheap that was at least 8 years ago when I worked with him I remember him saying his uncle could afford it and was getting up there in age I think in his 80's but to my friend he thought it was a huge waste of money for what was gained I am sure by now ? they have fast fill and drain options . as his you had to wait on it also to fill and empty
I remember him saying he just wanted to sit in it to say he sat in a 12k (or what ever ) bath tub .
JMHO I would almost wager the company's that build and install have figured out a way to get uncle sam to pay all or most cost due to health reasons ?

My new place came with 3 bathrooms and 2 of them having walk in showers. They do make shower benches that would easily fit into them so I will be set when and if the time comes.
I have preferred showers over bathtubs ever since I had to share a tub with 10 siblings using the same water that was heated on a wood cook stove. 🤨

We replaced the tub/shower in our master bath with a step-in shower. Absolutely love it. If we ever want a tub, we have two other full baths with them. Bought a nice teak seat for the shower so my wife can do whatever women do in there.

Might be easier & more cost effective to put a hot tub outside. That way, you can either have your private time or a party. 😎

My place also came with an outside hot tub. I have never used it and have been thinking about filling it up with some good dirt and planting tomato's!

plumbing: need 1" lines going to unit to fill in recommended time. Your house may or may not be able to support this volume.
Your water heater may or may not be able to support the amount of hot water.
Electrical: need a new soley dedicated 220 circuit
Unit is expensive, installation is expensive.
These units have a history of problems.

I recall going to the lake one yr and someone who had an old mobile home.. the floor had collapsed when the water bed fell thru the floor straight to the ground.

I can see that. The power, a 220 line, no problem. The heat, just install an on demand water heater, you got hot water. The problem I see is that when this unit is a few years old, a leak at the door. That could just ruin your day.

my mom moved in with my sister. They did a full bathroom gut and remodel around putting in a walk in tub. from the big name in walk in tubs.
Got everything done- the door leaked first try. They had to back order the door. 15 years later the door is still pending replacement. Never got to use the tub. Paid for a second bathroom remodel to remove the walk in, mom is dead, house been sold.

We put in a "Cal Spa" tub with a shower (like 1980?)...Got it when the kids were in school sports...Lots of jets...the wife loves it...but I prefer the shower...No problems all these years...A little bigger than a standard tub...and it take the whole water heater to fill it...But that has not been a problem...

I can also see problems with the motors. We installed a "hot tub" in our house several years ago and it cost a bunch of money. Not a walk in tub just a big fiberglass tub, had all these jets to rush warm water over you while you took a bath. It felt great!
In two years, the motors began leaking! Putting water stains on the dining room ceiling below. We had the motors replaced one time, cost a bunch of money, but they started leaking again.
I wound up just pulling the circuit breaker so the demonic motors could not run. That made it just a big, expensive fiberglass bathtub. Too complicated, and simpler is better than complicated.

Can't speak to the walk ins but we've had a jet tub for over twenty five years and had no issues at all with it, wife loves it. Original motor, never a leak.
