national oyster day
how can AUGUST 5 be national oyster day. do you see an R anywhere in the word august. and in all seriousness people who really like oysters know you don't get good oysters from warm waters, cold water oysters are far better. okay it time for all you oyster haters to pile on and tell us what you really think of eating an oyster.

...I like 'em IF they are FRIED crispy...
...I ate a raw oyster once and did not see the point of eating another one, you dont chew them, they just slide down, and there is no flavor except the hot sauce, so why would you put anything like that in your mouth that has no flavor?...

Nothing better than on a cracker with a little cocktail sauce.

A shot of lemon juice for me, and I'm set to enjoy.

Recently watched the movie "Spartacus" where Laurence Olivier asked Tony Curtis in the bathtub scene if he preferred oysters or snails. ๐ค๐ฒ
Pretty racy question for 1960 ๐

Love 'em. Who da hell says they have no flavor and you don't chew them?
The only thing I regret is that they are no longer $2 a dozen - they're now closer to $2 each. Sitting down to three or four dozen on the half shell is spendy.
It's also increasingly risky, as coastal waters get ever more polluted. But get some from cold clean waters, and eat them when they're so fresh their last thought is "What the..." and you are in heaven.

my son in law is a professional oyster shucker, has worked in oyster bars for several years. i think he told me he can average 12 a minute. that is opened, cut from the shell and placed on a serving tray. and yes you do chew oysters, a oyster from the gulf waters in the cold water months is extremely flavorful.

Just put them on the grill till they pop open a little.. my oyster knife in hand with some hot sauce.

They say that oysters will put lead in your pencil, I don't believe that though. I once ate a dozen oysters but only ten of them worked. ๐

I like smoked oysters in a can on good crackers. Mix them with good sardines, some sharp cheese, and those appetizers become a meal. ๐

Well in honor of this oyster day thingy, I just ate some bacon, eggs and toast... wouldn't eat an oyster if you paid me, but for those that do, you do you!

"ย Who da hell says they have no flavor and you don't chew them? "
I DO...
...Ive never seen one chewed around here...In my years Ive seen a LOT of people eating raw oysters, from South Padre, up around the Gulf Coast to tip of Florida, and I NEVER saw anyone chew one, maybe chewing them is a regional thing, at the least a personal thing...even at the docks when the oyster boats came in with sacks full of 'em...can't even imagine chewing something that looks like, and is slimy like a huge booger, beyond gross...

Yeah, and some think guns are gross. To each their own.

Tex, I applaud your astounding observational ability. To be able to watch people eat oysters and detect whether or not their teeth make impressions on said oyster requires supreme skills. Not only that, but to be able to know whether said oysters (that you've never eaten) taste good or not is amazing.
All I know is what I personally have experienced. And that is that raw oysters are indeed chewed, and are scrumptious.

The wife and I tried an oyster sampler at a high end restaurant in the NW of Washington...Pricy but not our thing...Now give me deep fried breaded clams with the stomachs...I am all in!!!

...Thank you sir...I do pride myself on knowing if an oyster is chewed before being swallowed...

You ever tried Mountain oysters?

Okie743 40 plus years ago in Oklahoma city went to a restaurant while visiting some friends and they had order an appetizer and I tried them and said "best dam friend shrimp I ever had" they laughed and said they are turkey frys! After that I would eat calf frys if offered, but won't order myself and still not ready for the full bull, much less a snot from a shell, but as I said previously each to their own, you do you!

Tex, you should talk to a Brahmin or a Hindu and ask what they think of eating beef. If you think they're out of their minds, that's what much of the world thinks about oyster haters.
Even harder to grasp is anyone who has enjoyed Mountain Oysters but won't touch the real kind. You'd eat WHAT but not seafood?
But please stick to your food aversions, all of you. If everybody liked them as mush as some of us do, oysters would go extinct.

Rocky, I live in a state where seafood (fish), is abundant, and reasonably priced. Shellfish is a different story, has to be shipped obviously.
One of our favorite restaurants always served fresh oysters, until the kung flu hit. Can't get them, so for now we enjoy the fresh fish entrees, and patiently wait for the return of our favorite appetizers.
Looked into having them shipped to us, but holy cow, not paying 3 bucks each.

I hear ya, Gregor. I live in Utah, where everything from the oceans has to be flown in. As a result, the locals are not seafood fanciers and there are few places that offer it - unless it's breaded shrimp. When I travel, I eat seafood almost exclusively because I miss it so much.

I live in the center of the country.
Love fishing. Go on a charter just about every year, from Alaska to the Great Lakes. Thinking the outer banks of North Cackilacky next summer.
Can't eat it. But, the wife unit and 2 of the three girls love it. Not allergic or anything. Just don't like it.
More for y'all!

Rocky Mountain Oysters don't have any shells. You just slap them on the side of the hot barrel holding the branding iron fire.

To clarify things a bit . I live about 1&1/2 hour drive from the beaches of NC .90 miles up the road from Ricci . No problem obtaining good seafood . Know several places to buy straight off the boat . My favorite is shrimp . I just dont like oysters ,clams etc

Not a thing here, and won't knock them.
I eat venison sausage cooked in some form of intestine, so I am definitely eating some form of animal guts, but knowingly consuming the nuts from something may require a few drinks to break the ice.
