New Tractor Came to Prairie Center
Sister has a boyfriend. Both are moving from Michigan to Illinois. He finally brought his tractor out.
I think back in 1987 they had an antique tractor show in Waterloo Iowa for the 150 anniversary of John Deere. It was an impressive show of various deere 2 cylinders.
This tractor is worthy of such a show. 730LP with a wide front and perfect paint.
I see Waterloo might be doing another show next year and I haven't been out since 1987. Maybe I should try to talk him into taking it out there next year. He knows it's sharp and a bit unique but I don't think he realizes just how unique it is and can hold its own with the best of restorations. He's an older gentleman and I think he might like showing it off once.

I see they are talking about having a show next year. I think I'll try talking him into attending and we take a tractor. I think he'd enjoy it to see all those tractors and know his is a bit different and special.

cool we only had one John Deere on the farm a Model B from the early thirties that my Grandfather had fixed up and took to a lot of the Old Thrasher shows.

My uncle had a JD 730 that I helped him cut corn and baled hay with so I have spent thousands of hours on one. His started with a gas motor then it cranked over the diesel.

Those "greens" of old are such great machines. Had a couple on out small farm. That's a nice tractor even if it not electric!!🤐

Not many of those around here. In fact not a lot of 730's at all since most operations didn't have need of that much horsepower. LP wasn't popular here possibly due to cold weather making them somewhat problematic.
Most of the 'show dudes' are switching to lighter, easier to haul tractors that don't require a HD pickup and trailer. John Deere B's and H's are the primary choices.
I spent a lot of "quality time" on B's when I was a teenager.

We wore out a pair of diesel 730's -- I started driving one as soon as I was big enough to pull the clutch. Pulled a pair of Krause tandem discs so much we wore an inch or more off the discs. Discovered that when we broke one and the replacement was much too big!
Replaced them with a 4010 and a 4020, then added a 4520 when they came out. Hard working tractors but didn't have the soul of the Poppin' Johnnies.
Then went to 4WD Case rigid frame and they had no personality whatsoever, just muscle.
They have a parade here in Glendale, KY that draws a lot of vintage tractors every fall.

Nicely done! Only poppers I have owned were a pair of 50's, field grade. Love the sound.

i have had several of the 2cyl JD's. mine were to work with and all i could afford at the time. they werent very speedy but they were better than a horse.

There is an older farmer just north of us that still uses his Johnny popper. I've never seen it, but there is no way you could confuse the sound with another tractor.

We always had red tractors except for the one 410 John deere that we bought and used for about 4 years . That thing would count them out when it got loaded down

Over the years I've restored several old tractors, as a hobby it's not really expensive providing you do the work yourself, parts are fairly easy to find but one will being doing very good just to break even dollar wise if you sell one, there's just not a collectors market for old tractors like many other things out there. I've found it's mainly a self-satisfaction thing bringing back our own personal past. Someones restored tractor for sale doesn't interest me as much as a pile of neglected junk sitting off in the weeds that has potential.
