Thinking about pulling the plug,,
and applying for my SSI. any one recently apply? Any tips, advice, explain how the process works when applying on line? Thanks.

SS will answer any and all questions truthfully ( and they have loads of answers ) you ask but will not give you a single piece of advice, the choice you take will be yours. I discovered/learned thru a friend, the net. and the public library how to get the best dollars when applying.....hey, it was my money they were holding so why not 😊

My brother-in-law applied years ago and it got no where. Bill was a steamfitter and for those not familiar, he was a welder that also worked on high pressure systems. He worked at Marble Hill nuke plant in Indiana. He was a big strong guy until his hips gave out. SSI denied him and he got a lawyer. He finely got to court and when he got on the stand the judge said he shouldn't even be here with his story and awarded him SSI. These guys will do everything they can to keep from paying you. Glad he finally got it. Yes he should not have had to go through all that.
I'm not talking about disability for me, just regular 'ol give me my money.

The wife and I did it online, and it was relatively painless. I had to jump through a hoop or two because of my USPS employment, but it wasn't bad. Granted it has been a few years ago and things might have changed.
You might want to read through some of those instruction manuals about how to get more money, but they did not help us in our situation.

You can earn $17,640/ yr without effecting your SS. I started collecting ,officially 1/1/19 but worked 3 pay periods to take advantage of that. I didn't retire from my job till the middle of 3/19. I started exploring the process a year ahead of retiring because I had no idea how much money I'd get and I was worried about screwing it up.

Got my 3rd payment deposited about a week ago, did it all online about 5 months ago, talking regular SSI not disability. As you have said you are also talking regular. It was a very easy process, just create the account, login look at their records of your earnings and make sure they are correct, if they are not, the process to correct any year is explained on the site. If all earnings are correct you just enter the info required and select when you want to start receiving (side note, I selected June which means 1st payment was in July). SSI is disability your talking about collecting your SS for retirement. SS was lots of information for the asking. Just get started and you'll get it done. If you want you can go to your local SS office and they will help you. Due to COVID you may have to schedule an appointment.

Do you mean Social Security retirement? That's a lot different from SSI.

OK guys SSI is Supplemental Security Income which is different than social security retirement benefits, but I don't get hung up on which acronym is correct, For me SSI was always social security insurance as I was growing up, but they obviously have changed what the different acronyms means... anyway I believe he is talking regular retirement benefits and either of the links that I or @SCOUTS listed will get you started, @SCOUTS link is more generic for the SSA and my link is more directed to what you are thinking of doing which is start collecting ""MY Social Security" either way like I said I went through the process in about 15 minutes once I had verified all the info and gathered all needed info to complete the form, then takes a few days (I think mine was approved in about 3 days) and that was it. A very easy process these days.

Joe, been collecting SS for 15 years. Nobody can predict what tomorrow will bring for sure. I bailed out of the stock market in '08 and took my profits. Maybe i could have done better by now and then again maybe not. Yes sir Joe, take your money and run. Life is too short.---------------Ray

Actually the limit can change each year and also whether you are at "full retirement age" or like me started collecting at 62.. anyways I just looked it up and for 2021 I can earn $18,960.00 before it starts cutting into the amount of my benefits... it really depends on what you qualify for and your age, You will need to go to the site to get the exact amount based on your information.

The Social Security earnings limit is $1,580 per month or $18,960 per year in 2021 for someone age 65 or younger. If you earn more than this amount, you can expect to have $1 withheld from your Social Security benefit for every $2 earned above the limit.

Hope yours goes okay. My wife signed up online in May to start July 1st for Medicare and SS.
She got he Medicare fine July 1. She has not gotten a single check yet. Tried resolving online no luck. Called national number, they say everything looks fine call local office.
Called local office and they were on a call with someone else, said they would call back as soon as done with other person. That was Friday morning and no call back by end of day.
She has to call again Monday.

SS will tell you straight up what the answer is on that, walk in or make and appointment due to the "virus" and ask, they have a local office.....I've been there already 😊
