    Diesel electric locomotives - you might call them the original hybrid. Seeing the tech applied to a Cat instead of just a soccer moms Honda is kinda cool. Bob

    Wasn't the big Le Tourneau grappled log loader also a diesel electric? Those have been around since I was knee high to a short sheep.

    If size and weight are not the limiting factor(or maybe even an advantage) the diesel/electric concept is good.

    Losing weight isn't necessarily a good thing. I've seen D10 dozers spin their tracks, and those things are heavy.

    Yes, the amount of work any machine designed for pushing, or pulling will do, is in direct proportion to what they weigh, I have had a very hard time explaining to some people why a 450 John Deere crawler will not do what a D7 or D8 Cat will do. Forget ever trying to get them to understand why a 200 ton crane cannot pick 200 tons 80 feet out.

    horsepower just doesn't matter if you cant use it.

    Did I miss something the link? I don’t see any mention of less weight. A diesel electric drive is very heavy in this type of torque range, and I doubt the generator/motor combination weighs less than a mechanical trans
