speaking of turtles

many years ago i was stationed at Moody AFB Ga. i rented a house from a local tobacco farmer and worked part time for him. one day driving home from work i found a large/very large gopher turtle trying to cross the road so i thought it a good idea to get out and grab him and give him a ride. at the time i had a 1967 bronco so i put him in the back which was the same as the front being how it was all open. anyway in a couple of minutes he decided he had had enough riding and came thru the middle of the bucket seats lookin for some butt to whup, being it was only him and me i was nominated. he came after me mouth open and hissing up a storm. i actually thought of opening the door and bailing out like they used to show in the westerns when a wagon was about to wreck. anyway i did get stopped and got out and opened the tailgate for him to exit. that is where i learned turtles can be fairly dangerous and to treat them with respect.

    A round here we treat them with respect, then we eat them. Coat and fry them, and then steam them to tenderize. Absolutely delicious.

    A regular sized snapper is an escape king.


    Can get out of a regular sized stock tank, it a pickup bed. Stand up on hind legs, leaning against side, barely hook their snout over the lip of top, and out they go.



    Eaten quite a few snappers and soft shells.


    Don't hardly see either anymore, and I give them a pass when I do.
