  It's been quite a few years since a local man was involved in a similar mid-air collision with another light airplane. With substantial damage, it headed for the ground; however, the whole-plane parachute system that he had the foresight to install deployed, saving his life & that of his passenger. I'm guess the 'chute isn't cheap, but it really does work.
