Shotgun as a pistol
My neighbor is telling me you can saw off a shotgun, put a pistol grip on it to make it a legal pistol. I kept quiet because I didnt know but I know a group of guys that do know. Is he going to jail?

I know a person that did exactly that and took it to the police station to register it. He was sent home without his gun and was very lucky.

The result will become a firearm made from a shotgun. It won't be a sawed off (short barrel) shotgun because it has no butt stock. This is a $200 NAF tax on a Form 1 with fingerprints and photos. Otherwise it's ten years in the slam, and a $10K fine.

Why would you want a shotgun with only a 6 inch barrel, and only able to hold it with only one hand. It would have to be a single shot, that in it self would be deterrent as to using it for defense, maybe a snake gun.

At a gun amnesty buy-back, anonymous people were hacksawing barrels in the parking lot to get an extra $50. Politicos were ok with this as it raised their statistics.

If the barrel is over 18 then you can remove the stock and place a pistol grip ... that’s about all I got

Mark Christian nailed it, Cut barrels to less than 18", remove shoulder stock, you have MANUFACTURED an NFA weapon. If you fail to touch second base with the ATF first, you are eligible for 10, 10 and a new roomie. Meet Slasher- he says your name is now Nancy.
The Shockwave is not an Any Other Weapon- it is an "other" Not a shotgun, as it has never had a shoulder stock, not a handgun since it is over 26 inches in length.
A caplock muzzle loader like the Diablo is not a firearm- it is an ANTIQUE firearm- and the National Firearms Act does not apply. since it uses loose powder and shot (no cartridge). The Serbu Shorty is an Any Other Weapon, requires ATF registration, since it is made on a virgin receiver, is less than 26", no stock.
This is an area that if you do not deal with it a lot, can get you into deep kimchi REAL fast.

I had a single shot Rexio 45 Colt/.410 for a while. Many revolvers available if .410 will work for him.

.410 Snake Charmer was just a hair over 18 inch barrel, had a thumbhole buttstock. Classed as shotgun, not handgun.

When I came home from the Navy in the early 70s a couple of my high school buddies had a sawed off Savage double barrel.They wanted me to keep it for them but I knew enough to decline to even touch it.They were caught for robbing a few banks and had to go away for a while.Where ever they went must have worked because 2 out of 3 of them were model citizens after that and retired from state jobs and were never in anymore trouble.I lost contact with the third but I hope things worked out for him.

Not legal. Shotgun can’t be a pistol. It can be an “other” without the overall length or bbl length requirements, but cannot have previously been transferred as a shotgun
