What's the deal with UHaul pricing?
I wanted to rent a 26 foot truck but all they had was a 15 footer. So I decided to rent a12x6 trailer as well as the truck. The surprise: The trailer rental was about $1200 or almost twice the rental fee for a 15 foot TRUCK. I'm only going 75 Miles away but it's on a Ferry and I'm ending up in Juneau, not some remote location. When did trailer rentals get so crazy at UHaul? They can keep their trailer. I borrowed one from a friend.

Can you return the trailer / truck to it's original location? I rented a box trailer to move furniture and mattresses to / from the lake house a couple weeks ago. It was cheap, I returned the trailer the same day. I think I was charged like $50 or less.

$1200 will buy a lot of used trailer in my neck of the woods. Use it and sell it if you dont want to keep it.
Sams Club has new 8x12 for around $1400.

It's all about moving season (supply and demand). Prices go through the roof in the summer. We have done 13 military moves and used a Penske/U-haul every time for all the stuff we don't trust the movers with. Key is early reservations. With Penske, I make my reservation as soon as I get orders (usually in February) for a June/July move. I have found that if I do that, I can get a 16-26 ft truck for about $250 for, as an example, a 1500 mile, 7-day move. IF, however, I wait until late Spring, that price would be 8-10 times as much. Penske is great because they lock your price. If I make a reservation in Feb, I can change the dates multiple times without the price changing.

$32.42 is what the local U-Haul charged me for renting the above trailer.
I believe they even gave me a Military Discount.

Jim Deere, We are moving to Juneau. We are tired of looking at the house and waiting. There are just two of us now without electricity. The other house will be demolished as it is off its foundation. My driveway and septic are still buried. We probably won't go back. Right now we need a change of scenery.

With rental cars very hard to get, a lot of people are renting U haul trucks when no cars are available. Might have some bearing on local pricing.

You think $1200 to rent the trailer is high, wait till you try to put the 15' truck and 12' trailer on the ferry.
I'm sorry for your loss. Why Juneau? Petersburg or Ketchikan are maybe more like what you're used to and you won't have to rub elbows with politicians and lobbyists every day.

We're going to Juneau because my wife's employer was able to transfer her to a job there. She'll be working full-time with three 12 hour shifts per week. Also, we can easily catch a plane to the lower 48 without having to take a ferry or stay in a motel in Juneau. Yes, the ferry is expensive. In total, we're moving 7 vehicles, ( trucks, trailers, cars, and boats) for about $2500.00. The good part is the wife's moving bonus will exceed the moving costs by a good bit. And Juneau can use a couple of conservative voters. My job?...what job... I've been retired for over 8 years. But I did work for over 45 years before retirement.
