Imagine the tens of thousands of license built merlin engines, the allisons and wright radials produced in a few short years. And most of those bombers flying the pacific and over downtown kraut land had four of them.

Back then patriotism was the norm, not like today when it's every person for themselves, and if they don't get what they want, they take it.

Back in the "Cold War" part of my Army Reserve job was looking at local businesses and how they could be "mobilized" to make stuff the Army would need.
Studying the examples from WWII was fascinating -- factories that made thermostats were converted to make fuses, etc.
Still amazes me to look at the mass of stuff we built for D-Day at Normandy starting with where our industry was when Pearl Harbor happened.
We quickly realized that mobilizing to build modern weapons was going to be a whole lot harder than conversions was back them. For example, casting Sherman armor is a whole lot simpler than making Composite Armor for the Abrams.

No way the US could accomplish any of that today. First of all, the necessary manufacturing capacity no longer exists. Second, nobody would have the know-how to make it happen because they kneel to the gods of outsourcing, often from countries that are potential opponents if we ever go to another real war. It's sad, but the US is destined to just sit on its hands and let others do what needs doing.

As the others have alluded to - the arsenal of democracy is at the mercy of the foreign manufacturers, some friendly and some openly hostile. Not only tech stuff, we wouldn't have enough energy production to make what we needed. Bob

I can just imagine as our relations keep souring with China. Those prescription pills for high blood pressure we are taking may just become suspect!! 😲
