    Either that wasn't 1958, or it was just a generic sci-fi "spaceman" balloon. I was initially going to say that it honored EdWhite, who took the first US spacewalk and used a small handheld thruster to maneuver. But that didn't happen until 1965.

    That's exactly the way I remember it, in black and white on our TV. I'm not sure what they called it, but Rocket Man comes to mind.
