I was awaken early this morning by the ultimately-patient and ever-forgiving Ms. Nanuq, in tears. Her brother had just died from Covid. He's the useless sack that never replies when we invite him for dinner or over for Christmas. But it's to be expected, he's twice divorced and he lost his only daughter to drugs a year ago. He was a loner, he home-brewed the best beer and wine I've ever had, he could submarine a Jet Ski almost 100 feet straight down into Resurrection Bay before he chopped the throttle. He pawned off untold numbers of huge dogs on us, and he smoked the best brisket I've ever eaten. He rode a mountain bike to work 364 days out of the year, the other day he stayed home sick. He was always honest, always kind, and maybe the most broken man I've ever encountered, and no matter how I tried or which door I knocked on, he'd never open up. He was darned frustrating, but such a good man. Lord, I hope you find it in your heart to accept him home to be at peace with Haley again.

I hope that someone says something that nice about an unliked individual such as myself when I pass.

I am sorry for your loss. He sounds like a guy I’d like to set down and have a beer or two with.

He sounds like a confused person with ups & downs. Hope he's resting well.

Amen to that, brother. Next time we meet it will be me kicking his sorry butt all over Heaven on mountain bikes. I'm sure Jesus rides too, and I'm sure we'll have a heck of a time keeping up with him. But we'll have all eternity to learn the trails like he knows them.
