Didn't follow the case closely, but am a little surprised about the 1st degree manslaughter conviction. The woman struck me as not having a malicious bone in her body.

In her last act as an officer she removed a punk from society who choked, robbed and threatened a woman with a firearm. She is paying for her mistake, but at least some good came out of it.

Yes sir, by removing that one bad apple in the long run I'm sure she saved quite a few apples. She like Alex Baldwin, did what they did by not using their heads when it counted the most, dealing with firearms. I"m sure he was watching this case closely, both were on the job and not paying attention, that's hard for anyone to excuse.

I freely admit that I am a country boy, dumber than a box of rocks, and the closest I ever got to law school was making a U turn that time I got lost- but can someone please explain (use small words) HOW do they get TWO convictions out of one act? Is it buy one get one?

The MN statute allows for 1st degree manslaughter if the death is unintentional, but occurs during the commission of another crime. I think the jury was incorrect in this as the other crime would logically have to have been the 2nd degree charge. This would seem to suggest that there is no disconnect between the two charges.
Of course, seeing as I received my law degree reading this very forum, my analysis should be taken with a grain of salt.

I see negligence in that she is responsible to know her own equipment and failed to do so. I think she should be held responsible for that. I haven't put a lot of thought into how but this seems over the top. The police are supposed to be the trained professionals on the scene and IMO that standard should be the expectation. Situations of course turn into what they do and everything can't be trained for. Knowing your equipment can be trained for.
