my son is looking at a model 70 winchester 30-06 it is marked Winchester model 70
made in New Haven, Ct USA. serial number is G2154797. im trying to figure which model 70 it is. or about when it was built. can anyone help me with this.

My guess would be mid 90s also. I have a 70 that I bought right after they announced the shutdown and it is just over 3 million. There are a lot of models and you didn't give enough info to determine which one it is. Schnabel forend would indicate a featherweight. Is it blue, stainless, walnut, laminated, etc... With that serial I am guessing push feed and not classic controlled round, but they put that action in a lot of models. Bob

plastic winchester stock. i dont have a lot of info, gun is 300mi. away. this is why with the guns i do have, there is not a model 70 in the bunch. price is 400.00 with a junk scope. thanks

For 400 bucks, you should just buy it. You can't even buy an action for that anymore.

Check out Winchester 70 Shadow on the auction side. They made I believe 3 versions, shadow, super shadow and ultimate shadow. I have an ultimate in 270WSM and its been a good rifle. Toad is right, unless it has been abused or bubba'ed it is probably worth at least $400. Bob

Just some Win 70 info from experience.
Yes, for $400 I buy them just for the parts. Parts are very expensive for the Model 70's now days. Buying used parts is also a roll of the dice even when the serial numbers are close in years made.
Do not just assume that being a Model 70 that the parts will interchange gun to gun. Lots of small differences in bolt parts, etc.
Another one: About Win 70, late models.
Turned out to me a pleasant surprise and a very nice, smooth operating, low recoil, all weather, accurate hunting rifle. It's now my favorite hunting rifle. The operation of this rifle is smooth as silk. Feeding, trigger pull. As a hunting rifle I would not swap it for a pre-64. I think Winchester finally got it all together after the POST-64 model 70 downgrading. Although I've seen several post 64 Rifle that I've tuned to very good operation and accuracy.
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO HUNT WITH A UGLY GUN.
I accidently recently bought a new in the box Model 70 from GB, Morgan Utah on the barrel, Stamped on barrel, Stainless Feather Weight, and is a controlled feed with the nice fancy engraved wood stock, wood inletting is precise. 264 Win Mag caliber. Gun has a 24 inch barrel and weighs 8 lbs and 2 oz without scope. (Not FW in weight size) Several had bid on the gun and I bid in the last 30 min because I liked the looks of the Win and low and behold it timed out, everyone else went to sleep.
One of the very few rifles that I've seen that wants to group all bullets in the same hole at 100 yards when first taken to the rifle range and straight out of the new box.
I decided to put a beater stock on the gun for hunting this season which opened in about 2 weeks after the purchase so as to save the nice OEM wood stock.
Bought a FW barrel wood stock that looked exactly like the OEM but it had couple light dings.
This FW stock came off a late model win 70 30;06 stamped FW on it's barrel.
When I went to drop the 264 win mag action into the replacement 30;06 FW stock the 264 barrel contour was larger and would not even start to fit into the stocks barrel channel..
When I started checking the 264 barrel contour is was very nearly the same as a removed old Model win 70 7mm mag barrel that I had. I installed some sticky back sandpaper onto the 7mm mag barrel and slow spun it in the wood barrel channel to get a proper contour floating fit and then re-glass bedded the wood stock for a perfect 264 floating barrel fit. (and same accuracy) Did not even have to re-adjust the scope.
Summary: Just because a barrel on a Win 70 is marked FW does not ensure that the barrel contours are the same for drop in stock replacement .
I previously thought that Featherweight stamped on a barrel would be the same contour caliber to caliber. This one was not even close.
Good to see that Winchester is really now a rifleman's rifle with their new designs.

400 is not a bad price if the rifle is in good shape. Pre 64's are my favorite but this certainly is not one from the description. Post 70's right after the change are probably the least desirable, but they are not deserving of all the criticism they got. Winchester started improving as the years went along. I have a XTR in '06 that was made in the 80's and I like it well. I bought one of the shadow models when they first came out in 270 WSM. It is a controlled round push feed (crpf), a hybrid between the two extractor styles. Never did like the synthetic (plastic) stock so I found an OEM wood stock and bottom metal and changed it. Love it now. The new Miroku Winnies are excellent, right there or better than the pre 64. I have several model 70's and love them all. The rifleman's rifle.
