A Christmas Story...MERRY CHRISTMAS!
A Christmas story:
When I worked for the Greenville Police, I arranged to work the holiday for two officers with small kids. I put in for the Christmas Eve and Christmas holidays, and being senior, my request was approved. I then offered to work for the two officers, one on each holiday. They were grateful and I worked their shifts, no problem.
And then, guess what? I got a butt-chewing from a member of the brass, one of them that works inside the building, away from the public, and who is off every weekend and every holiday. This administrator said that the way I handled the giveaway was wrong, that the officers I did not consider were angry about it.
The way I looked at it then, and now, is that the holiday is my day, and I can give it to whomever I choose.
But, I was told to never do it again, and I did not.
I did something nice for a couple of my brothers, and got a butt-chewing over it, and was told to never do it again.
What do you think about that?

All I'll say is, I'm a firm believer in seniority, in situations like that.

If that guy was teed off over that, I can only imagine what he was like on a REAL grievance! That is the kind of superior that leads to quitting or early retirement.

I've often done something that I considered nice only to have it come back and bite me in the butt. The important part is that those other two officers had a good Christmas. Kudos to you in spite of the anal retentive brass monkeys opinion. Bob

During my early working career while single , I worked Christmas and Christmas eve for my married co workers who had small children . They appreciated it and paid me back in later years .

I think that was very nice of you Nunn and I am sure the officers appreciated that. No matter what the brass said you did a good thing.

There are those you work with and those you work for. I often encounter folks who say you used to work with "so & so". My response to some of them is no, that's a guy I used to work for and there is a difference.

As I told a department manager a long time ago, "You're the kind of &*^%$### that exercises authority just because you have it!" He paid dearly for his high-handedness, we maintenance people can spend a LOT of the allotment of funds designated for the year, thus affecting the bonus $$$$. 🤑

It has been a wild ride. I lead a big organization. Nunn, all I can say is your wisdom is never lost on me. I may not be a police officer but I have learned so much from you on how people should be treated.
Your frustration in this situation is not in vein, because I learned from your wisdom.

It was your time to do with as you pleased.
You can't make everybody happy, especially jealous "brothers"
You should have done it every year.

I had kids too. When the kids were little, and I gained enough seniority to have my way, I would make a deal with another senior officer with small kids. I'd take one day, and let him take the other.
But then, my kids got bigger, and other officers had small kids. So, when Christmas season came along, I declined to put in for the holidays off, allowing others to have them. That backfired on me, When I left the market for those two days wide open for junior officers with kids to have them, they got scarfed up by a more senior officer with no kids.
The next year, I did as described in the original post. It worked really well, or so I thought, until I ran afoul of the administration. I run into some of them from time to time, usually at funerals. There are still a few that won't speak to me unless I speak first. How mature.

Those are the ones I make sure they speak to me! I'll walk all the way across the room to MAKE them, just to tick them off!

Job well done Mr. Nunn! You gave a gift to those you felt most deserving of it. I would imagine whatever regard you held for the desk jockey evaporated at that point. Sometimes, folks just don't know when to keep their thoughts to themselves. I suppose we've all been guilty of that.
