Just a reminder
Christmas is near and folks will steal anything if the vehicle isn't locked. Well today was an example and I didn't even know my tailgate on my Ford F250 Locked. I came out of Lowes and seen a young man.. about 25-30 at the back of my truck. I had parked out past the garden area with only a couple other trucks around me. So as I approach he is wrestling with my tailgate. Has one strap unhooked and getting ready to unhook the other. The tailgate is down. HIs van is parked next to me with the rear doors open. I approach and say...Hey let me help you with that. Just as I get within reach and he has both hands on the tailgate I gave him a very strong right punch right in his nose face area. He goes down and I am ready to kick the living daylights out of him when he grabs his face and says I broke his nose. He scrambles gets in his van and leaves with the back doors open. So now I will lock the tailgate so some other idiot doesn't try and take it.

That was real common here before the locking tailgate about the only tailgate that was safe was the beat up gates on the construction trucks

My tailgate has.a secret opening method. You have to pull up on the handle with the left hand while simultaneously pounding the center with the right hand.
Oops. I guess it's not secret anymore.

I believe putting the steel toes to his groin, shortly followed by his face, would have been in order, while screaming, "Stop resisting!"

Didn't even think about what happened after he got up holding his face. I was putting my tailgate back on. Sure glad he didn't grab a gun in the van while I was fiddling with the tailgate. My piece was in the console. I cannot remember when I actually put the fist to someones face. It has been that long.

I worked with a guy that had an older model Ford Super Duty.He had several tailgates stolen and anything else that was fairly easy to remove.The truck was finally stolen and was never seen again.

glad you at least goy one good punch in and lucky he did not have "buddies in the van " for what good it would have done did you happen to report it or get his tag number
many years ago I comment to my co-workers when we were talking about thief's a truck tail gate would be just a couple minutes and its gone easy pickings
back then 50 to 100 would have been easy to get for one now like stated I would wager many xx that amount to replace
the way things are he would win a lawsuit for doing harm if you had really stomped the crap out of him . I can hear it now "he was just walking by and noticed your tailgate was loose 🤨

My 07 Ford Ranger pickup's tail gate has no lock. I put a capper on it with dual side latches that do lock.
Several reasons for wanting a cap on my truck with the major being the locking feature. Taking it shopping and going to several stores made it a thief magnet when you had to leave stuff in the bed. Then, not having to shovel the snow out of the back in the winter. I know the chincy latches would be easy to break but the old saying "locks are there to keep honest people honest" still holds some limited meaning these days.
I'm sure glad you caught the bad guy in the act select-fire! And your method of instant justice made my day!!☺️

Just don't do like we saw recently at Home Depot. Walked by a truck that had the keys in the tailgate lock.
That would be a bonus for the thief, the tail gate and a key.

When I lock my doors my tailgate locks. The tonneau cover latches from the inside. I'm covered. 😆

My 2015 F-150 automatically locks the tailgate when you lock the doors. To unlock the tailgate and the passenger door, you have to click twice on the remote unlock button.

I've seen a lot of people do that. The key they use is a plain key with no coding so it will open the cab but will not start the truck. Some trucks the tailgate locks automatically with the rest of the locks. They put the key in so they can open the tailgate when they need to without going to the cab for the keys or to hit a switch. Mostly I've seen this when bird hunting as they are getting in and out of the truck often and the locking tailgate is a PITA. Especially when you have seen some birds and want to let the dog out of the box quick.
Generally you would take the key out of the tailgate when you ran to town, they must have forgot. Deactivating the automatic locks is a better way to go though IMO.

My lock is just a lock. Put key in turn it 1/4 turn to left or right.

Larry has heard stories about tailgate thieves.....he is adamant about locking everything up at all times. Its a crazy world we live in.
