I Need Advice On Removing Paint From Revolver
I have an Airweight Smith & Wesson that some idiot painted black. It looks like H-E-Double Toothpicks, and I'd like to remove the paint.
The gun was originally blued, and the frame black anodized. Is there a paint remover that will remove the paint, but not harm the underlying finish?

My guess, emphasis on the word guess, would be mineral spirits. Get it really wet and use a brush to get into the tight spots. I wonder what the finish looked like before he painted it? Good luck. Bob
Ignore my mineral spirits suggestion. A quick Google search gave conflicting answers. Some recommended it and some said it would remove the anodized finish. Not worth the risk.

I had an old Savage 24 that someone had painted the tennite stock.Being that tennite is really a fragile plastic I knew sanding or strong solvents would do more harm than good.I mixed about 1/3 Mean Green cleaner and 2/3 hot water in a bucket and let it soak 24 hours and the paint fell off and didnt harm the stock.Or if you have access to a heated ultra-sonic cleaner that may work.

If I tried mineral spirits, I would put the whole thing in a plastic jar with a good lid, close it up tight, and leave it for at least several days.

Whatever you try David, try it under the grip area first, so at least it is out of sight if it doesn't work on the original finish.

I think Id take it all down to bare metal and have it refinished.

Parts that I have made and had anodized, the anodize is an electro-plating. However the finish of the underlying material does show up.
Your best bet is to start with a weak solvent in an area that does not show. Goof Off or mineral spirts with Q tips. Work your way up from there. Good luck.

David, I take paint off of guns all the time, mostly painted sights, using ACETONE. If you don't have any, ask your wife if she has any nail polish remover which is usually 100% acetone. It works great for me. Just wet a small section of cloth and rub the paint off. I have both a 642 and a 442. Great guns.

What's the bullseye mark & scratch above the cylinder latch?

It is a keyhole for the action lock and the "scratch" is an arrow showing the direction to turn the key.

I used Foaming Citrus Stripper to remove the black paint off this S&W M&P 38 special.

I think I read a survivalist book or article back in the 1980's that recommended painting silver guns black. You don't want the "Kong" to see the glint off your snubby 38.

Completely disassemble then put painted parts in a covered ultrasonic tank filled with Acetone.

Paint stripper will work. That pink or orange stuff I hav used on anodized scopes and rifles. No issue
