One that got away. Winchester 1907 351 SLR. Marked South Carolina Dept. of Corrections.
I'm guessing the ones that got away from almost every one of us would be a very, very long list.
So I walk into the little neighborhood gun shop and there are a couple of ol' country boys looking over this 351 SLR. I waited my turn, looked it over and thought it was in real good condition but I did the unthinkable. I thought to myself, "I don't need that! What would it be good for?" Both statements were as true than as they are now but need and want are rarely the same thing!! 😁
All I had to do was say "Donny, put that back, I'll be in next week and pick it up." and that 351 SLR would have been mine. But did I do that?? Of course not!! I let that 351 SLR work on me several days. We all know the outcome of this story.
Several days later when I went back to buy it, it had been sold the day before.
Did I need it?? Nope. Did I have a use for it?? Nope. I don't even know why I wanted it. Maybe because it was fairly rare, both the model and the chambering?? Maybe because of the Dept. of Corrections marking?? To this day I can't tell you why I wanted that rifle and I can't tell you why it still bothers me just a little that I let that one get away.

All of you certainly understand that a gun that gets away from you will cause you far less trouble and grief than a woman who got away from you?? Far less expensive also.

That is the way I determine if a gun is for me, walk away and come back later and if it is still there I buy it, if not no big deal ,just wasn't ment to be.
BUUUUTTTT there are may time when I get in my hands I won't dare lay it back down cause someone is looking over my shoulder thinking I wish the %$$&*( would hurry and lay it down.

I have a dozen stories like that. Neighbor was having a garage sale. I was moving so tight on money. Neighbor had a Browning BAR (civilian) 30-06 for 300.00 also had a German G-43 semi-auto 8mm for 100.00 I had the money to buy both. Look up what a German G-43 rifle is going for.

30+ yrs. ago, I pawned my colt trooper mk III for $ 75. Never had the $$$ to get it back before the pawn expired.

one I remember right now
a co-worker had a Luger artillery model his dad had gave him , he really had no idea about it and was asking me about it . what I thought and explained his dad had given it to him before he passed on . with the pistol he had the stock , holster, a drum magazine and assorted goodies ( I am sure it was a bring back ) at the time I would have loved to had it but with no money I did not even make a offer 😥 . as he seemed to want to just know about it rather than sell it so I just never ask
so about a year went by I crossed paths with him in the hall way at work and I ask do you still have that Luger ?
sad to say his reply , no , I really needed money and a fellow gave me 500.00 for it
one sad day for me , I would have came up with the 500.00 some how but at the time I felt if he did sell it would have been 3 to 4x that much and I also did not want to take advantage of him offering some lesser amount

30+ years ago I was shooting a lot of PPC and there was a local guy that I got a lot of my loading supplies from. One day I stopped in and he showed me an almost mint S&W mod 52 that He was selling for a friend. He wanted $300 for it and that was a fair price at the time but I couldn't justify buying it for some stupid reason. Thought about it overnight and decided that maybe I could find room in the safe for it but it was sold about 20 minutes after I had left his shop. Comparable early ones like that are around $2000 now.😣 🙄Bob

Had the reverse happen a couple of times. Once, at a gun show, there was a Rem. 722 in .244 (I'm a sucker for 722's). I was looking it over; I don't remember the price but it was well on my side of reasonable. There was a guy right on my shoulder waiting for me to put it down. I didn't put it down!
