Most dogs I know of in courtrooms have 2 legs.

Pits can be very empathetic. Evidenced by their fierce devotion to home and family.
Everyone: please don't drag out horror photos of dog attacks, you all know damn well that's not what I mean !
Those types of photos only proove that any animal, including human, can be taught / provoked to violence !

I too spent many hours/days in courtrooms. The only dogs I have seen in courtrooms were the bomb dogs going through clearing the rooms before high profile cases.
Most of those dogs can not be petted while working.
