Auto mech question
Ford 1995 F250 5.8L V8 (351W) auto trans, 2 wheel drive, regular cab. Rear main bearing seal is leaking pretty bad, part is less than $30 but how much is the labor gonna cost me? From what I found you gotta drop the drive shaft, disconnect trans and move back to get off the flywheel then replace seal and put back together... more than I care to do myself, maybe 40 years ago with a couple of friends and a case of beer... I have a mechanic that I pretty much trust, but looking for ball bark numbers to see where he might be.

With a hoist and a transmission jack. I wouldn't expect to be under there four hours.

While it's apart I would also replace the front transmission seal. I've seen several where that seal will start leaking soon after doing the rear main. Another thing to look at have a real close look above tranny to make sure it isn`t the intake seal,if the back seal that runs along the block from head to head,leaks, they will give the look that it coming from between the engine and tranny.

To state the obvious. If you are going to take it to a mechanic let him diagnose the problem instead of just asking that the rear main seal be replaced and put it in writing with the understanding that if his repair does not fix the leak then it is on him. And let him furnish the parts.

I would guess I could have done the job in my younger days in a couple of hours if I had a lift and didn't have to crawl around on the ground. So about a couple hundred bucks plus parts would have covered it back then. I would guess dealers would charge 2 or 3 times that amount today.

How many miles on the transmitten?
Be prepared for surprises.
Change fluid and filter while you are at it.

@Ricci.Wright The mechanic is the one who said it was rear main seal... and thanks for the idea of getting him to commit if not the actual problem.
Also thanks to the rest who actually answered the question and those that provided other things to consider.
For those that asked, 180K miles, transmission was serviced around 125K if I remember correctly... anyways was just looking for a ballpark figure on the hours/price of labor. Thanks.

Pay the mechanic by the job not by the hour.

There is an hourly rate for most every job.
