Jesse James blinked due to powder burns. Black powder embers from a shot near the face causes irritating scars across the eye ball. Could have been from his guns , friendly fire or the enemy. Same injury happened to a famous lawman from Texas , 1890s - 1920s Shot at while pulling a criminal from under a bed.
