Warbirds vs Rubiks cube
Dave vs robot round 1 (fail)
Technically it is my oldest son (11) he really wants to solve a Rubiks cube. He will constantly fidget with one.
Well the old man has stepped in and I decided to help out. However, I may have bit off more than I could chew. We have been 3D printing parts for a “robot” for 2 weeks. I ordered RC car servos, and a few web cams with the plan to power them with a Raspberry Pi (tiny computer). While I was at it, I bought a 7” touch screen LCD display, so the robot could show what it sees & what it will do next….
The idea is the robot will “see” the current pattern and work through an algorithm until it solves the rubiks cube.
We are having trouble timing the servos correctly, but hoping to find some time this weekend to figure it out.
Right now, it is still running off a full size windows laptop so there are really at least 2 rounds of problem solving to go (timing the servos & Raspberry Pi/LCD screen integration
All 3D printed hardware. I used colors that are not on a Rubiks cube to make the cube stand out.

Whoa.
My grandson watched how to solve the cube on u-tube over and over. He finally got it. He can now do any of the cubes or tri angles on the market.

Those parts look great. 3-D printing on a hobby machine must have come a long way.
I'm impressed with the gears and racks, internal/external threads all look really clean wow!

Yeah, no doubt. My Rubiks Cube solver is a four pound hammer.

Very cool Dave! If I understand the Rubik's cube properly, there is an algorithm that works regardless of pattern, which leads me to wonder if the visual is necessary? Perhaps you just want to be able to see the face(s) while the robot solves?

Printer is a Prusa I3 MK3, which is a real workhorse.
They are going to introduce an “XL” model in the fall and I will probably upgrade once they are available.
I do lots of gears and mating surfaces, basic mechanical parts and the Prusa is solid.
Yes there is an algorithm that if repeated enough will solve the cube. I still need something to “run the robot” from (start, pause, stop) , so going to try and I had a 7” Raspberry pi display sitting around.
The black shelf in the pic below would be where that display is mounted.
