Must be post 1873. They are all using Colt Model P revolvers ... first produced in 1873.
I know this because Hollywood always gets these things right ! ... 😆😆🤣

The cowboy and cattle drive parts were good. The romance / woman parts were pure Hollywood - way out of realty. The firearms were wrong for the 1865 time period of the cattle drive. The movie was well scripted and held your attention throughout.

Whatever your thoughts on Montgomery Clift, he was pretty slick about getting his left foot in the stirrup as he hopped up to hit the saddle. Not something common in westerns.

Montgomery Clift was great in this film. Looked like a cowboy to me. I know it was set after the Civil War because Montgomery had gone off to fight in the war.
Bonanza was set from 1861 to 1871, and they all used Colt 1873 Peacemakers. I guess Adam wouldn't have looked right running around with a powder horn and a little box of percussion caps.
Those cartridges in the belt looked cool.

Most all of M.C.'s movies were great performances. I could care less about his life off camera.
Never mix politics with entertainment !
