February 15, 1898 ... 😉
USS Maine destroyed, leading to Spanish-American War
On this day in 1898, an explosion in Havana harbour sank the battleship USS Maine, killing 260 American seamen and precipitating the Spanish-American War, which originated in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain.

The sinking of the MAINE (whatever the actual cause) was a great excuse to go to war….eventually getting us Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
Kind of similar to how the very small cavalry skirmish on the Mexican border (after we had amassed troops there) was a convenient rallying cry to war with Mexico….. getting us most of the West.
Some might call it the American business model……try to buy it, get turned down, pick a fight with a weaker nation, win, and take what it was we wanted in the first place.
Watch closely. Russia is setting themselves up to use a similar approach with Ukraine. With the border tension, Ukraine needs to be very careful not to get lured into even the smallest of engagements.
