Types of FFL:

- Type 07 – Manufacturer of Firearms
- Type 08 – Importer of Firearms
- Type 09 – Dealer of “Destructive Devices”
- Type 10 – Manufacturer of “Destructive Devices”
- Type 11 – Importer of “Destructive Devices”
Are you an FFL? Which type? Anyone care to explain differences/limitations one from another? Thanks.

my youngest son had / has ( not sure if he kept the 07 one .) I think he sold off all the F.A. he had done and owned last year most here on GB ) I know he still has the 01
he has a friend in Texas I think has them all covered LOL as he just bought another tank

I'm a Type 3 also know as a Curios & Relics FFL. I'm no expert but I understand, under the rules pertinent to my C&R FFL, that I can collect (directly receive) firearms that are 40 years old, and older, and largely unaltered from their original configuration (materially unmodified). It's nice to have older, collectible, firearms come (shipped) directly to me as opposed to going through my local Type 1 FFL for a transfer fee. I may not, under the terms of my C&R FFL, be in the business of buying firearms for the express purpose of re-selling them (that would make me a "dealer") though I am allowed modest transfers as would be allowed for any individual.
Some Type 1 FFLs will not ship directly to a C&R FFL regardless of the firearm eligibility as a matter of policy. Most will if you're in a state that doesn't have any issues with such deliveries.

- Type 01 – Firearm Dealer/Gunsmith
- This is your basic FFL which allows you to buy for resale and sell for profit. Gunsmiths are also expected to be making a profit on their work. May deal in NFA firearms (excepting Destructive Devices) with payment of Special Occupational Tax Class 3.
- Type 02 – Pawnbroker
- Nearly identical to the Type 01, other than slight difference in the record keeping required in the pawn industry due to a reasonable expectation that the person pawning the firearm will return to claim it. May deal in NFA firearms (excepting Destructive Devices) with payment of Special Occupational Tax Class 3.
- Type 03 – Collector
- The Curio and Relics FFL allows collectors to buy and sell firearms classified as Curios and Relics across state lines. They are not allowed to buy firearms for the purposes of resale. In addition, their FFL privilege's are strictly limited to Curio and Relics and not normal sporting arms. Special Occupational Taxes in any class is not possible with a Type 03.
- Type 06 – Manufacture of Ammunition
- A license to manufacture sporting ammunition only. If the cartridge is over .50 cal and has not been specially designated by the Sec. of the Treasury as being specifically suited for sporting purposes, a Type 10 FFL is required.
- Type 07 – Manufacturer of Firearms
- May produce firearms for resale, excepting Destructive Devices. May manufacture NFA weapons (excepting Destructive Devices) with a Special Occupational Tax Class 2.
- Type 08 – Importer of Firearms.
- May import all types of sporting firearms. May import National Firearms Act weapons, (excepting Destructive Devices) with payment of Special Occupational Tax Class 1.
- Type 09 – Dealer of “Destructive Devices”
- May deal in Destructive Devices as well as all types of sporting arms. Dealing in NFA weapons requires payment of the appropriate Special Occupational Tax Class 3.
- Type 10 – Manufacturer of “Destructive Devices”
- This is the big boy- a $3,000 FFL. A Type 10 with a Class 2 SOT can manufacture literally anything that shoots or goes boom- short of a nuclear device.
- Type 11 – Importer of “Destructive Devices”
- As it states: If it's out there, a Type 11 can bring it into the country.
I hold a Type 01 FFL with a Class 3 SOT. I also have a Type 03 FFL, which comes in handy in a few circumstances my Type 01 doesn't cover.

Type 04 was a Dealer in Any Other Weapons
Type 05 was an Importer of Any Other Weapons.
These two FFLs were dropped in the mid 1980s and replaced with a Type 01 (Dealer) or a Type 08 (Importer) FFL and paying the appropriate Special Occupational Taxes.

I have the 03 C&R.

Also have an 03 since 1976. A C&R Firearm is FIFTY years old or older- OR is on the list published by the ATF (like ALL Colt Woodsman pistols, ALL Winchester Mdl 88s, etc)
Advantage? My LGS has a copy of my FFL on file. I find a nice vintage 1950 Mossberg? He writes me a bill of sale, notated "FFL on file", I pay him, shake hands, we are done. I am traveling in another state, find a nice Victory Model S&W- I can give the seller a signed copy of my FFL, pay him, take the gun. Normally you could not acquire a handgun in another state- would have to have it shipped to a dealer in your home state.
As said, an 03 is NOT to engage in any business. Only drawback- you stay broke! Some 01FFLs are not familiar with an 03, and don't want to make transfers to them. Their business, their call. However, it is my money, and MY call where I spend it.
