    I have no idea, but I do know Ruger has been very helpful anytime I had a problem or question. Might give them a call. 336-949-5200

    I opened up my copy of September 1968 Guns & Ammo review of the newly released M77, and the review reads as follows;

    "The American walnut stock of the GUNS & AMMO test rifle is straight grained with an oil finish. The pistol grip and forend are hand checkered, 20 lines to the inch, and is clean and sharp."

    I have a 1969 flat bolt M77 and I got the impression that it may have been sprayed with some kind of sealing varnish, but it's hard to say. Sturm Ruger changed its' manufacturing techniques all the time.

    not sure the one's I have one has a glossy finish but I also have one in a dull oil finish . I had old magic ( member on here ) refinish the glossy one as I did not want to mess it up it had sentimental value to me ) it it came back looming like new

    I'm sure many more will have insight on what or how it was finished but agree start with ruger they are truly helpful

    or a plug for Keith ( Old magic ) if you want some one to do it

    Every Ruger I have ever owned had American Walnut with a great oil finish. Not shiny, but not dull either.

    well i got this one in and it doesnt look nears as bad as the photos seem to show. an older red pad one. it sure looks like a varnish type finish to me but who knows it could have been redone a time or three.
