Saw on the news out of Detroit this morning that the new EV F150 was starting to be shipped to dealers. $40,000 starting price and a 320 mile range. The 2022 production is already sold out.
Folks, good or bad, we are witnessing the end of an era. How we are going to generate and distribute enough power for all these glorified golf carts is beyond me. Why we are putting ourselves at the mercy of China for rare earth minerals and computer chips is also beyond me. Why would I want a vehicle with a 10 year life battery is beyond me. Why would I want a vehicle with a long recharging time instead of a 10 minute fill-up is also beyond me. Since the EV batteries are extremely difficult to recycle where we are going to store toxic used up batteries is also beyond me.
I guess this proves that I must not be that smart because none of this makes a lot of sense to me. Time marches on and I guess all I can do is follow in its wake. Bob

Aren't those tv ads saying "up to" 320 mile range? Is that dyno tested in controlled conditions? I remember using re-chargeable forklifts that ran a long time, but when you put a ton on the forks, that service time dropped considerably.
I can't even imagine putting a plow on the front of an EV pickup and pushing snow.

Never mind the plow, just running the heater in the winter will probably cut your range considerably. Everything in today's vehicles that is powered by the engine, ( heat, air conditioning, lights, radio, heated seats, etc... ) will now have to run off the battery. Bob

When the powers that be want us to start driving EV,I imagine gas will be 25 bucks a gallon..Not many of us can tolerate $500. a fill up.

I will be honest and break from the heard.
I could probably drive the electric truck and be just fine. I drive about 8 miles each way to work, 4 days a week.
I prefer a truck for hauling my boys around and I think the most heavy duty haul I have made in the last 4-5 years is a load of bicycles to the park.
Now all that said- my current truck is paid for and I can buy alot of gas for $60K that the new electric truck would cost.

A EV would be able to do about 60% of my needs it's that other 40% that it falls way short and I think their still quite a few years away to be able to cover that other 40%

Friend came to South Dakota from Tenessee this winter. Tesla range cut in half due to cold weather.

Mandates for EVs are coming and have already been put in place in some areas. It's a silent ban on interstate travel since you can't drive very far in them.

It isn't just local mandates. Most auto manufacturers have announced that they will be phasing out all combustion powered vehicles in the next 10-15 years. A couple things are "fueling" this; unrealistically high mpg mandates by the feds and demand for EVs by the younger consumers. By the time those younger consumers become the majority in 10 or so years the vehicles will be there to meet the demand. A lot of those, now younger, customers don't even see the need nowadays to own a personal vehicle. Times have changed because I couldn't wait to get my first car because of the sense of independence and freedom that owning it gave me. Now if the Twitter generation needs to be somewhere they just get on their ever present phone and call a ride service like Uber. You don't need a lot of ambition or personal responsibility to do that, just a credit card. Bob

Manufacturers only want to build what they know they can sell, so local mandates are driving the change, which is ironic because no one wants to drive these stupid EVs.

If you lived in a city in a moderate climate i could see owning one. My brother's son-in-law (lives in Atlanta) has had Nissan Leafs for 10 years and loves them. He trades every 2 years so he has fresh batteries and claims the cost of ownership and operation is nil. This time he may sell his car, not get another and drive his wife's Prius because the used EV market is crazy high. He thinks he can get $8,000 more than he paid for his 2020. Then he can get a new Leaf when prices come down. Whenever that will be.

My daughter is 18..........no DL. She just got interested in getting one so I am teaching her to drive. Does she want a car? Nope. Her grandmother even offered to buy her one. Does she want a car? Nope. F $ @ k............my mom never offered to buy me a car. I saved money from 6 years of throwing a paper route in the Texas panhandle to pay for my first car.

EVs are great for SOME people. Id love to have that ford lightning, BUT I can't afford to buy it. IF one was already NEEDING a new vehicle, then it MAY make sense. But the govt FORCING us to buy EV will never work. I can't afford to spend 40, 50, 60k on a new vehicle. I have 3 that will outlast me. I would NEVER make my money back, even at $5 gal gas.
Not to mention, we get ALL the batteries from China. AND we do NOT have a good way to recycle them. Going to KILL the world mining for items to make batteries only to throw them in a landfill in 8-10 years.
Going green thru EVs will be the death of the planet.
Remember.......big bad "Carbon" is CARBON DIOXIDE!!(plant food!) CO2 doesn't sound scary, so they dropped the dioxide part!

My son has one of the new Ram T Rex pickup with the big Hemi engine, the 0-60 time is 3.7 seconds in launch mode. The F150 Lightning has nearly the same 0-60 time.
