what caliber??
i have a rifle that i am selling for a lady who lost her husband
i found NO marking what so ever to tell me the caliber. i even removed the barrel from the stock. the only thing i see is "REMINGTON 700"
i took the rifle to a gun shop and he placed something in the barrel and said it is 6mm. is not the 6mm and the 243 basicly the same?
if it is 6mm would a 243 chamber? if it is a 243 would a 6mm chamber?
any help appreciated

apparently the bore is 6mm. You may need to do a chamber cast to determine the actual caliber.
There are several 6mm calibers, some wildcats.

"6mm. is not the 6mm and the 243"........the bullet dia. is the same BUT the case is different, the 2 do not interchange. your friend apparently has a m-700 with a custom barrel. the only sure way is to do a chamber cast however it probably is a 6 mm Remington as per the gun shop.

6mm will not chamber in a 243, 6mm is a longer case. 243 will/should chamber in a 6mm but don't try it, might get ugly fast.
Chamber cast is safest way to go.

something in the bore. i inserted a 243 in the chamber and the bolt would not extract it. so 1 down and 1 to go

The 243 is shorter thus the extractor would not lock on to the case rim. Did the 243 fall out after pulling the bolt back?
Looking more like a 6mm Remington all the time.
Smith ought to be slapped for not marking the barrel with correct cartridge.
I would think a Creedmoor will chamber in a 243, at least close enough to catch the extractor but not a 6mm Remington.

Fit checking different cartridges is an unreliable and dangerous way to determine chambering. An unmarked barrel can easily be checked with a cerrosafe chamber casting. Any good gunsmith has it on hand, and that same smith can stamp the caliber on it for you.
