The unique holiday was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw. What is Pi Day? March 14 is a day to celebrate the mathematical constant. Every March 14, mathematicians, scientists and math lovers around the world celebrate Pi Day, a commemoration of the mathematical sign pi.
- Pi is all encompassing.
- Pi is ancient.
- We've used computers to calculate pi to more than 22 trillion digits.
- Humans have memorized vast stretches of pi.
- Pi has a bit part in many books and movies.
- Even rocket scientists only need a bit more than a dozen decimal places.

Emma Haruka Iwao, a Google employee from Japan, calculated pi to new world record. Google announced the milestone on Thursday March 14, also known as Pi Day (3.14).
Iwao calculated pi to 31 trillion digits (31,415,926,535,897), far outpacing the previous record of 24.6 trillion, set in 2016 by Peter Trueb.

I love Geometry. The Pythagorean theorem is how you figure rafter length when building a log cabin. The genius of Greekm matemeticians from 2,000 years ago is taught to us in school.

@allen griggs you'll really get a kick out of this then. Starting with the Pythagorean Theorem explain how ancient mathematicians derived the trigonometry identity sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1
I was enduring a root canal once years ago and needed something, ANYTHING to occupy my mind. So I puzzled on it awhile and it popped right out at me. So did my tooth.

I thought about that crop circle for awhile and those mathematicians getting their panties all in a twist over it, need a better hobby. There is so much wrong with their statement it's embarrassing.
First, there is nothing real and imaginary (complex) having to do with a simple ratio of terms. Because it's irrational doesn't make it magic.
It is not a fractal anything. There is no fractional geometry at play here, and no self-similar characteristic shapes produced by self-referential repetition.
There is no "coding" involved in the sizes of the rhomboids. Their sizes do not represent relative areas.
As one calculates increasingly tiny results the relative contribution to the fraction will become smaller with each iteration. The first number is massive: 3. Next number cuts that 3 right down to size: 3.1. The next number has us narrowing in on fine tuning now: 3.14. We're already counting how many hundredths get added into that 3rd column. So making the green 5 massively bigger in area in the 9th position than the preceding red 6 in the 8th position is silly. Each layer moving out from the middle represents AT MOST 90% of the previous layer.
Why was the shape drawn using decimal numbers? If you're representing relative ratio areas of contribution by digit, on a circle, use heximal numbers. Pi: 3.05033 00514 15124 10523 44140 53125 It makes it ridiculously easier.

I like the a squared plus b squared = c squared. Don't get started with that sine and cosine stuff, that is Calculus I think, I can't understand it. Makes my head hurt to think about it.

Pi is basically a mathematical off shoot conception of a circle with a point in it and starting with a compass at that center point and drawing a circle and starting at the intersection of perfect aligned cross over it and starting another same diameter circle at these overlap nodes and repeating this action over and over again then you have created The Flower of Life.
The flower of life has been know for many centuries and is basis for all known basic geometry shapes. Thus it is a way to explain the mathematical principles of creation. Thus it is a kind of magic to the human mind,for rational conceptions of all things in 3-d world.

The Flower of Life is the modern name given to a geometrical figure composed of multiple evenly-spaced, overlapping circles, that are arranged so that they form a flower-like pattern with a sixfold symmetry like a hexagon. It's also referred to as sacred geometry

@allen griggs that’s the beauty of it! Sides a, b and c in a triangle, a sine is just the ratio of b/c and the cosine is the ratio of a/c. Think of a rafter, as it gets steeper the ratio of the “height” to the span gets closer to 1:1. If “height” over “span” is known then you know the length of the rafter because a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Ratio of height/rafter is the sine of the angle at the soffit. Sine squared is height squared over rafter squared.... and here comes Mr. Pythagorus.
