I traveled the I-285 loop around Atlanta every weekday for 3 years during the mornings, and during all times of the day and in the evenings as a project manager building new and remodeled schools for the DeKalb County School System and I saw it all.
Those people traveling the speed limit in the fast lane think they had the right away. There was a lot of fiery crashes due to those people. I've seem them on the news if they survived saying "I was just traveling along minding my own business doing the speed limit and someone hit me in the rear and then started shooting at me." They might think they're in the right away but the cops will give out tickets to these people for impeding traffic in the fast lane even if they're doing the speed limit or above if they're holding up traffic because they're a hazard on the highway.
I didn't need but one trip to learn to stay out of the way. If someone is running late and want to make up some time they can just wait a few minutes until a quarter mile long train of these vehicles come screaming by in the fast lane at 80 to 90+ MPH and then fall in behind them if you want to get across town fast. Sometimes another train will be running in the next lane over going even faster and pass up the train in the fast lane. God help the people that's cruising along at the speed limit in either of those lanes when that train of cars comes up behind them because they'll either move or get moved. Don't try to break into those train lines, fall in behind or you take your life in your own hands. That's just the way it is in Atlanta especially early mornings. People are in a pissed off mood, many are on drugs and booze and hung over and they're late for work and they will kill you. I can't ever remember going to work in the morning when there wasn't at least one car demolished on the side of the road or over the guard rail. Most of the time it would be multiple crashes. I-285 varies from 8 to 12 lanes wide and two million cars use that loop on average everyday and there really is no good time to be on it only worse times than others.

Try that on the autobaun and see what happens. I've been on it and it is an event for an American but not a big deal for the Germans. Everyone knows what the situation is and drive with respect (mostly) to others. Now driving in Athens is a completely differently situation. Traffic signs there seem to be merely suggestions.

I agree that I-285 in Atlanta has always been a nightmare.When I drove a tractor-trailer there you could not keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. If you backed off to a safe distance,4 cars would cut in front of you.Seems traffic was either running 80 mph or stopped.

@2 No You don't have to drive in all of them at once.

In contrast, I used to drive from my home to Clifton Forge, VA. on Sunday evening, a 1-1/2 hour drive, and not pass a single vehicle.
