Remington 7400
Someway through the years I have acquired a Remington 742 in 30-06 and a Remington 7400 in 270.I dont see me ever using either in the future so I am in the process of cleaning them up to sell.Cleaned and lubed the 742,test fired it and it works like it should.Cleaned and lubed the 7400 ,test fired it and it will not pick up the last round from the mag.Took the mag out of the 742,same results.I know these are old guns and chances are I have 2 worn out mags,but anything else could cause this? I priced new mags and they cost more than I paid for the 742 back in the mid 70s.

If the 742 is working fine and the 7400 doesn’t work with either magazine, it’s probably NOT a mag problem. Not sure what the issue might be, though.
If you really do need mags, they’re all over for about $30 or so. Not too bad.

Remington semi autos are well known to have function problems whether they are 740, 742, or 7400 or even the latest attempt to make a working semi auto centerfire rifle by them the 750. There are many variables, some work, some don't. Good luck.

Usually, the issue with the 742/7400 is the sticking chamber/FTE issue. Got to keep those chambers nice and polished. Typical with the long action models, and less so with short action versions.
This issue is of a different variety.

Both of these guns are spotless clean,especially the chambers.

Try using a magazine from a 7600. The bolt stop on the 7400
may be interfering with the last round. Been to many years since I worked on those models.

Since the bolt stop is on the follower, I'd think that it would easily push the last round in.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong places,but factory mags are expensive,if you can find them in stock.I am going to try WantAds here.

Is there a place where you could locally find one to try and see if that's your problem? It would suck to pay good money for something you don't need.

GPC has the boxes in stock, you'd just need to use your follower and spring.

Mags are over 50 now. $30 dollar days are over. Believe it or not, I would try a another dedicated magazine. Maybe a buddy you could ask?

Aftermarkets are still around $30. Of course, finding them in stock is the trick.

on the 7400 there are several magazine 'catches' and they are numbered.

When you say that it won't pick up the last round, do you mean the bolt goes over the round, and into battery w/o picking it up, or does the bolt not close?

agree, if possible, try another magazine or two maybe the spring / follower is not allowing the bullet to push up enought to allow the bolt to pick it up ?
I have a 762 and 742 both are 30-06 had them for many years I kept a couple mage for each one but temptation got me I sold off all the other spares I had the factory magazines have been crazy priced for some time short action a little cheaper but long action versions I sold more than few for 70. to 80 .00 each some even more that were still NIB each that was three yrs ago I have not looked lately

I took the mag apart and cleaned it in the ultrasonic cleaner,it had a lot of crudded up oil in it.Lubed all the parts with dry lube and reassembled it.Now it will feed all the rounds but will not lock the bolt back on the last round,but I can live with that.The mag that came with the 7400 is marked multi-caliber and is not made as well as one marked single caliber that came with the 742. Thanks for the advice.There is a gun show in Ashville this weekend and if I can get away I may wander around there and see if I can find a mag that is not scalper priced.

if possible take the rifle with you, then you can try the mag and not have to worry if it will work or not, if they won't allow you to try inside go to the car and try if they will allow returns, I have had a time finding some for my 760 that would release from magwell, and got in the habit of taking the rifle to all the shows with me......
