Custom handgun barrel questions
Maybe this should be in general discussion. Move if you think it is a better fit.
I'd like to get some custom barrels made for non-standard semi-auto pistols. Something like extra barrels for the Peters/Stahl Linkless type found in Springfield Omega's, a 10mm barrel for a S&W 4536 and/or CS40.
My question is this something any gunsmith could do? Or, will it take a specialist? Any suggestions as to who? I've looked online and have found zero prices anywhere for this. Anyone have an idea of something like this would run per barrel type?
Anything I should be aware of?
I've only done vaguely similar things like having shotgun barrels shortened and/or threaded for chokes as well as replacement barrels put on Remington 700's. That's it...

Sounds expensive, but anything can be done. I think I would start by calling someone like Bar-Sto Barrels and see what they had to say. You might be able to use a 10 mm S&W barrel for the 4536??

Thanks Ricci. For some reason ,I hadn't thought to contact barrel manufacturers. I guess I was thinking they only mass produced popular models. But if there is a similar model, perhaps they can run with a blank they already make.
They don't make a 10mm in the length of the 4536, which is why I want to make one. I don't think the longer ones will work due to the flare at the end of the barrel to seat in the slide.

@bambihunter Could you have the longer barrel shortened or have the flair machined off. Then sleeve the barrel by having a new flare (ring) machined & silver soldered on where needed?

Back in the day way before Bar-Sto moved out of California. They used to have pages of barrels they used to make. I don't know if they kept the old programs to punch in to their tools but they would be my go to.
Ah, the Detonics' threaded barrels with sleeving. I got a highly customized Scoremaster where the previous owner cheaped out had the smith chop and re-crown a stock sleeved barrel. I should have Steve Bar Sto rebarrel this with a 5" and a 6" barrel.
That reminded me Storm Lake might be another barrel maker. But I think none of them would be useful to you. Unless you got stupid amount of cash to throw at them.

Well, Bar-Sto replied and they don't do any of my requested projects.
I am not positive I followed the Detonics reference though I know just a bit about them. Are you saying use a 10mm barrel in it then cut down and sleeve if needed? Barrels (only) for these 3rd gen are virtually non-existant. I do believe they use the same slide opening diameter, but of course the barrel is belled so cutting it down to fit would remove that.
Maybe you guys can tell mostly what I am after (other than additional barrels for the Omega). I would like a small compact 10mm auto (something like an officers/commander 1911, but not it). I've got an AMT Backup that was professionally converted to 10mm. It is a handful but fun to shoot. The trigger is horrible though.

Detonics does not use a barrel bushing. The end of the barrel is flared. Early ones were cut down/straight barrels with a flare (bell) soldered on (around) the end to mate with the slide opening. Maybe you can buy a full length barrel, cut it shorter & have a ring (bell) machined to match the bell & solder it on (around) the end of your shortened barrel. Heck, machine the cut off end of the barrel stub out of the inside of the original bell & solder that bell to the outside of the shortened barrel.
