Michigan DNR asked us to remove feeders - Avian Flu
I'm on the Michigan DNR’s mailing list from hunting/fishing licenses. It’s a fairly nice service with interesting newsletters, but sad today. They asked people to temporarily remove their bird feeders due to the spread of the Avian Flu into the wild bird populations.
Its the time of year we normally start hanging orange halves out to attract the Orioles and hang the hummingbird feeders. But I guess we’ll need to wait for the all clear this year. Hope the little critters make it, wouldn’t be the same without them.

I live in one of the biggest waterfowl flyways in the country. Just driving around the country there are dead geese all over. I live about 7 miles from my "town", one day I counted 11 dead geese that I could see from the road. I was on vacation for a few days and just got home last night, I have about 5 dead Robin's in the yard. I have a friend with a large slough on his land and he drove around it on his ranger and said he counted 120 dead. The big migration has mainly passed through here around 2-3 weeks ago but still a lot of local geese, see some of them dead here and there but not like during the migration plus the coyotes clean them up.

That would be bad news for my neighbor, she keeps about 6 feeders full year around and her back yard COVERED with sunflower seeds. I think she spends at least $1500 a year on bird seed. Her husband passed away in 2020, and she loves to watch the animals feeding out there.

Well that stinks. I guess when the sunflower feeders get empty, I won't be filling them again. I haven't put out the Oriole or Hummingbird feeders yet but did lay in a supply of a half dozen jars of Welches grape jelly for the Orioles. I like grape jelly but not 6 jars worth. Anybody got a good recipe using grape jelly? Bob

2 slices of whole wheat bread, buttered on one side. Add as much chunky peanut butter as possible on one piece of bread, spread your jelly on the other slice, slap it all together with a side of chips, and wash it down with the beverage of choice.

Thanks Bubba! I never would have come up with that on my own.😉 I actually am kind of fond of that recipe, but I substitute a good sourdough and smooth peanut butter instead of the whole wheat. However, at the rate I eat PBJ, my 6 jars probably will last me a good year or two. I used to have a recipe for BBQ sauce that used jelly and with the grillin' season just about here in Michigan maybe I should dig it out and make a batch. Bob
