Who was/is your favorite country singer?
I have been listening to country music since about 1965. One of my all time favorites was Merle Haggard. So many great ones have passed over the years. I listen to Willies Roadhouse on Sirius XM and am amazed at how many songs I still remember but haven’t heard for years.
-
George Jones, followed closely by Merle then the outlaws, (Waylon, Willie, etc.) I can usually sing along with any country from the late 40's to the late 70's after that it's hit and miss.

George Strait and Reba.

All the outlaws.

Billy Joe Shaver. Hank W. As far as the newer ones go, Sturgill Simpson. Sierra Ferrel. Charlie Crockett. Absolutely none of the urban-contemporary country clowns.
6 -
Johnny Cash (the man in black) and Bobby Bare. Otherwise I'm not a CW fan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZD9lHnCKR0Heard this song some 40 years ago, a kid was playing it aboard ship. Heard it maybe 3 or 4 times back then and looked it up a couple of months ago.
Remembered every wor like it was yesterday.

Johnny Cash (the man in black) and Bobby Bare. Otherwise I'm not a CW fan.
I get to see Bobby Bare quite often as he goes bass fishing in the lake I live on a lot. I have been in the local restaurant a couple of times and Bobby would come in and eat. He’s really a great guy, Bobby and Porter Wagoner spent their winters in the town I live in fishing and hanging out and singing at Cat Fish Johnny’s.

I'm really shocked no one has mentioned Cody Jinks. He is BY FAR the most popular "outlaw" country artist right now.....and deservedly so.
I absolutely love his music.
Check it out, one of my favorites:

Hoyt Axton is way up there too. Technically George Straight isn't an outlaw, but I include him. Love Jamie Johnson and Chris Stapleton too.
